Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Campbell White Sapote HELP?
« on: March 25, 2024, 04:44:52 PM »
David, post a photo of your Campbell tree. I noticed they are on the weak side until maybe one year. Then it will perk up and start growing.

If you search the forum on Campbell white sapote, you should see one member who used a special soil blend from Laguan Hills Nursery that seems to work real well. I plant to pick up a bag, they are not cheap though.

I have two Campbell white sapote from Laura's, one is a year old, the second one is recently purchased this month.

My mother tree died, so now I only have the 2 cuttings that I rooted last year.

Added Thong Dee to the list.

8. Thong Dee

I didn't notice it already had flowers that were open and many were already pollinated and has small fruits on them.

I did collect what I could, just cut off the flower from the tree. If anyone needs to use Thong Dee pollen, send me a message. I didn't buy any silica gel packs yet.

The best one had brix=28, fresh ripe, not old wrinkled fruits.

Ok, here's a quick update on rooting guava cuttings. I just noticed one of my cuttings from a variegated guava that I just pushed into a pot laying around in my garden had new leaves growing. So, it looks like it will have roots soon, this cutting was in the pot for over a few months so it should continue to grow. I'll post a few photos of this rooted cutting later tonight. I may just need to root most of the Sylvia guava, may be easier than I thought.

Another forum member showed me his success in rooting guava cuttings, he used the same method as rooting mulberry cuttings in a pot with plastic bag cover.

Lauta, thank you for this good information on collecting the pollen. I have not done it much since I don't use it for breeding. I'm just helping some people who could use it for their projects.

Where do you buy the "silica gel stones" ?

yup, same here. I have 30 seedling trees that have fruited, and many have been better than any named varieties that are sold. My top tasting, highest brix loquat fruit is from my seedling trees.

35
No, citrus is my favorite, I have over 90 varieties of citrus grafted. Loquat is my number 2 favorite.

Paulish, I found the source of the Rudy #1, it was JF (Frank). He sold it a while back when he was very active on this forum. Now he doesn't do much sales here.

Here's the old post which shows he sold it before, if you can contact Frank, he probably has access to a few cuttings.

https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=19220.msg255871#msg255871

Good luck, let me know if you do buy it from Frank, I might be interested in adding it to my collection as well, just to preserve it. Frank use to live very close to me, but he moved down south to Yucatan.

Pau, the list of Rudy cherimoya is Rudy #1, #2, #17, #20. And from this list, Rudy #20 seems to be the best tasting from those members who have actually tasted the fruits.

Hi, if anyone still has a grafted Fairhaven white sapote (from JF), I would be interested in buying 2 cuttings of it. I had some nice branches grafted with fruits before I had to dig up my large seedling tree and it died in the process.

Desertcitrus, how did you determine you have a X-639 rootstock, did it come with a tag that has this info?

Anyone read anything with compatibilty of Meiwa with macrophylla rootstock? I have many different citrus varieties on my large macrophylla tree and so far I don't see any issues with the kumquat, orange, lemons, pomelo, citron, mandarins.

chrisafix23, that is good news, thanks for posting your progress. How long has it been potted?

Did you keep it in a dark room/location or just in the kitchen with normal room lights?

I will start to root my cuttings (this weekend) I had that were left over of the batch of cuttings I shipped out to everyone. I plan to date each one so I can see how long it takes for any buds to show or roots to form. Maybe in June, if some of you have not had success at all, I can go back to the tree and get fresh cuttings that I will root following one of the successful methods discussed here and sell it to folks that did not get any success.

Sale is Over.

yup, well I did have to give him the idea for the name. Afterwards he was happy about it since his wife really like the idea. He told me it was his wife that likes to eat the guava fruits.

Here's my finger lime tree I mentioned above that has the Banpeiyu scion grafted on it. I can tell that I will need to have a permanent support for this grafted branch as it gets larger next year. I will probably leave the graft on until it has a fruit so I can take a picture of the huge pomelo growing on a finer lime tree.

i arbitrary give it that name of Betty, then after talking with the home owner, we decided it would be nice to name it after his wife Syliva, so that is what happened. In the beginning he didn't want to give it a name and just asked me to name it but changed his mind later.
