Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mini Mango Hedge
« on: March 02, 2024, 09:35:39 AM »
It can probably work but 11ft will get cramped in a few years.
Even with the lower vigor trees thing grow really fast here.
My Angie is around 15ft with yearly pruning.

I'm having a problem 7 years later with planting things (12ft) too close.
Keeping trees high density is a lot of work its not easy to have a functional and maintainable yard with this method.

Very doable at scale in a grass field with full sun to promote dense growth

Wait for it to break dormancy.
They don't look great this time is year.
One early summer comes around it should look a lot better.
If it doesn't than I feel your pain. We have some pest in north Broward that makes sugar apple very hard to grow now.
Atemoyas seem less effected

I have the standard purple and Hipolito growing and have tasted Haitian, Hipolito, Jaco Beach, the standard green that they sell here and Lara's and A-1.

To me, Jaco Beach and Hipolito were the best tasting, but the greens tend to ripen a month later so I guess they have more time to develop sweetness on the tree.

I'm starting to graft some of my rootstock and I clipped a lot more branches from the mother tree then I need.
Since these are already clipped this is for local pick up only.
Probably going to have some tropic sun scions too

Thai everbearing is the size of a chicken egg normally.
Underrated, very good. Also low vigor

Cherimiya can cross with Muricata as per: https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=6641.0

This guy thought he’d heard Duguetia could cross with other Annona: https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=51858.0

Don’t forget about possible A.macroprophyllata (Ilama) hybrids?

As far as I know cherimoya doesn't cross with soursop.
What that forum member appeared to be selling was annona Montana.

The main named ones in the Florida trade are large and red/purple on the outside.
So this probably isn't one of the main ones from here

8
I planted mine in 2018 and it is around 10ft tall now.
Has been giving me around 30 large fruits every year.
I only prune it to shape it, never trim the top

Recommendations how often for mangoes?
Is it better to  go weaker and more often?

Starting off weaker is better for various reasons.
From what I remember the uptake of nutrients happens a lot better in the new tender leaves.
I mostly use it for non mango trees. If I need it at all.

Yeh is a reticulata from JFs travels. He spoke very highly of it
I never got to sample it as my tree died a few years ago

I might bug you for some budwood at some time in the future

They seem to be self-pollinating.
The fruit usually starts maturing in late December.

To me the fruit is just all right, maybe a little nicer than starfruit but we don't have many options at that time of year.

14
Calastro aka super African pride is pretty good too.
The flavor is kinda mostly sweet though.
I like a hint of acidity with my atemoyas

15
I don't hand pollinate mostly due to it conflicting with my mango season responsibilities.
All 3 seems to set a reasonable amount via natural pollination.
I help by having my compost bin nearby.

Tropic sun tends to be a little earlier in season than the rest.
It seems to be a back cross with squamosa

16
From the ones I've fruited.
Dream, Gefner and Tropic sun my tops
Im hoping to fruit some of the good AU ones in a few years

I really like Fwang Tung but it doesn't have that classic starfruit flavor.
Kari is really nice, it's as good as any in terms of standard starfruit flavor.
I personally would go with Bell, mainly due to the larger size of the fruit.

Just some advice about malay Apple.
What you find in the nursery trade in South Florida is not great.
This is one of the few circumstances where I'd say get a seed from "back home".
I've planted 3 trees from the nursery trade here and got a few fruit after 14 years.
Must people I know from Guyana and Trinidad bring seeds over and get fruit in 5 years.

Also, wax jambu can get worms

19
The one in f&s Park is pretty fruitful. I don't see any others nearby

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone growing Bay Leaf?
« on: October 20, 2023, 12:09:37 PM »
According to Wikipedia, there are a few different plants that people refer to as bay leaf.

I never had much success with proper bay laurel in South Florida but I found Bay Rum and All Spice leaves to be perfectly adequate for my needs

21
If no one takes the cambuca or pouteria, I’ll pick them up this December.

Sounds good.
See you in a few months

Skhan has some really nice ones for sale for cheap.

Thanks for the shout-out.
I have plenty of 3 gal sized red jabos for $35.
If you left it in a 3 gallon pot I think it would fruit in a year.

23
Cambuca from Hawaii, 7g pot around 4 feet. $80

24
3 gallon red hybrid jaboticabas for $35
Around 3ft
I have a bunch so pick up whatever one you like.
Local pickup only

Hello all,

I'm looking for seedlings or scions of seedlings of Z2,Z4, Marisa, or any others (including good unnamed selections). besides E4 (already have). Only looking for seeds/scions off trees that have done well in South Florida.

You are welcome to budwood from my seedling.
Its really productive and doesn't require cross pollination.

The fruit I get it August/Sept is a lot better than the one in June/July.
So far 3 or 4 years of fruiting.

I also got seedlings
