Avocado tree...should I give up?
« on: September 30, 2017, 01:29:07 PM »
We planted a 7 gal Florida Hass last February along with a number of other fruit trees.  Unfortunately the avocado didn't fare well in Hurricane Irma and snapped in half, literally.  I noticed that just below the break it's starting to push up new growth.  Is it even worth it to let it try to re-grow?  Am I just going to get root stock, whatever that was?

It will come back no problem.  As long as its above the graft you will get your same fruit type.  You may want to just trim the break straight right above the new growth.

Not sure I would cut it that far back/close to the break since that would be mighty close to the new growth.  Would hate ro see dieback where you make that cut affext the new growth.  If anything, cut halfway back on the break.

OK thanks guys.  I'll trim the break back somewhat and see what happens.

OK, 5 weeks has gone by since the hurricane and this is what is looks like now.  It's coming along.  I sure hope the break was above the graft.

Pretty much all grafted avocado tree sold around here have grafts 6" above ground.
Mine is about there.

Agree.   That is well above the graft.

If it was mine I'd keep the grass well away from the trunk and mulch deeply.  All my avocado trees have a fine white network of roots on top of the soil right underneath the mulch.

Great, thanks so much for the feedback.  Fingers crossed and will add mulch.
