Here is a thread from another board a regular poster here did a while back.  Maybe some could share more on how this project ended.

This website has a great deal of information on the subject.  Of course you have to realize they are a nursery that is trying to sell more trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My Freeze Damage Feb. 2015
« on: February 23, 2015, 09:18:13 AM »
I have one tree that lost the tender leaves that flushed the week before the freeze.  Everything else turned out great.  I covered and heated even my 6-7 ft in ground trees.

My pickering, Rosigold, and LZ all have fruit set.  I may need to wait a few weeks to see if the heat and cover saved them.

I have seen a number of members using plastic clam shells like what a bunch of grapes would come in.  They need to have lots of holes to allow air flow.

Bad news - it was 38 F in my back yard.
Good news - My cat slept with the mangoes.  Hopefully it was toasty enough to save them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: young mango tree not growing
« on: February 17, 2015, 06:46:27 PM »
I have had carabao and rapozzo trees that did nothing for a couple years. Then they just take off.... Sometimes it just takes patience.  Give it a little boost with kelp spray on the leaves. They sell the bottles at home depot. Follow the directions (mine is 2TBSP of kelp extract per gallon of water). Spray the top and bottom of the leaves at dusk (on a dry night).

Make sure the soil is dry before watering again. I have noticed waidelia seems to do something to the ground. I haven't quite put my finger on it, but I have an avocado that has been stunted for 3 years.... until I cleared the weidelia back far and gave it a fresh scoop of sand/dirt.

FYI - Wedelia appears to be Allelopathic.  It may stunt the grow of anything next to where it is growing.

Happens to me, I just "top it off" and never had a problem :-)
Thank you for the tip!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Soil Settled and level looks low
« on: February 06, 2015, 07:24:28 PM »
When I transplanted this mango the soil settled to reveal part of the root system.  Anybody had this happen before? Should I add soil until the level is back up to where it was or just leave it only?  Thank you

In all seriousness, what harm could come from spraying copper on flowers of the mango tree?

Copper is a serious anti-biological poison. Flowers are too delicate to handle it.

I have read that rain on open flowering can wash the pollen away reducing successful pollination of the flowers.  Then it would be logical that spraying any liquid on the flowers could also wash the pollen away.  This is the first article I could find that talk about the problem.  It talks about it about half the way down.  Search for the word rain.

Of course if you have a major problem spraying may save what little was not affected.

The guru has spoken.  Thanks Squam for the clarification

Squam - I noticed you didn't include NDM #4 or Maha Chanok.  Of course in ground is preferred to container, but are those two not good container mangoes in your experience?

I was leaning towards keeping the NDM #4 in the container because it would be in the front yard and I did not think it produced as pretty looking mangoes as a Rosigold or Maha Chanok.   Also anybody else have experience they could share on those two in containers?

Thank you for the new contacts.  I will contact Ed at Greens and Bob at Green Jungle Nursery on Goldenrod.

Mike was very nice.  He spent an hour showing me his nursery and answering questions.  I am glad I met him.

You did not just buy a tree. The long trip was worth it because you learned a lot. You can learn a lot just by looking at what another guy has going on. How he arranges his planted fruit trees and greenery. In this case at Mike's nursery.

You don't get this with mail order
Mike was very nice.  He spent an hour showing me his nursery and answering questions.  I am glad I met him.  And 15 gallon trees for $50.

I drove 300 miles round trip to Trees N More yesterday.  Mike is a good guy.  He patiently answered all my questions, gave me a few tips, and showed me his nursery.  The trees looked good for $50 in 15 gallon containers.  I was pleasantly surprised when I got home and realized the tree's root system almost filled the whole 15 gallon.  Super healthy root system that reached to within an inch of the edge of the container.

Thank you for the suggestion.  I am really happy with trees.

Yes, I am familiar with Hopkins.  There have been multiple "forms" Alphonso that have been circulated (not sure what it stemmed from although if Hopkins got it from Zills it should be the real deal).  Did yours come with any ID tag?

Yes, Yellow printed tag says Alphonso with Hopkins Nursery on it. Also has generic mango care instructions with the Hopkins website printed on it.

My Keitt appears to have come from them.

I thought about buying the Alphonso\Kesar from POG but I wasn't sure what I would be getting.  Then I saw this Alphonso for a good price with out shipping.

Yes, a true Alphonso is a relatively poor producer here in Florida. I would not give it a prime location.
Thank you all for the information and great insights.

Interesting way to put it Rob - "true Alphonso".  I have to take the nursery's word until it fruits I guess.

I got my Alphonso from a local nursery with a good reputation, but they just bought it and resold it.  The tag says it is from Hopkins Nursery.  Anybody have experience with them.

I don't know about alphonso, and have heard it does poorly here in FL, but I am pretty sure LZ is the most vigorous of this group.

Do you have all these, or are you considering them?

One thing to think about is your personal taste preference.  I got a bunch of trees at first that were recommended for container growing/keeping small (based on fairchild's info and PIN's website).  Then, I went to a huge tasting event at Fruit & Spice park last year, and got some fruit from some generous forum members, and realized I didn't care much for the fruit, and had to replace them with varieties I like better.

I do have all but the Lemon Zest.  I bought them in October.  I recently read the great advice about trying them first.  It was a little to late since I already had them, but I will have to bring my wife to a tasting event this season.  We have different tastes when it comes to mangoes, but both love them a bunch.

Thank you all for the great advice.  I guess it makes me wonder if anyone has experience as to which of the following as the most vigorous growers.
Keitt
Alphonso
Lemon Zest
Peach Cobbler
Glenn
Mallika

I would plant the faster growers 10'-15' to the north of the slower growers.

I am thinking of keep two more of my mango trees in containers.  I already have a Pickering.
Does anyone have advice or experience on which would do best between:
Mallika
Nam Doc Mai
Rosigold
Glen
Neelam

Thank you for the suggestions.

savemejebus - I can make the drive.  It is just the time and money.

bsbullie - That looks like a great deal.  With the drive it would be about $30 in gas plus 4.5 hours of time and wear and tear.

If I could get good one delivered for $80 it would still be worth it to mail order.

I have bought from PoG and PIN before.  Both worked out just fine for me, but they don't seam to carry this variety right now.

Hello all

I am looking to buy a Lemon Zest mango tree.  Where would be the best place to buy?

I live in the Orlando area, so mail order would probably be best.

Thank You
