Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: marcotting vs rooting question
« Last post by NateTheGreat on April 18, 2024, 06:34:18 PM »
That is a very good answer except for the last point. Any cutting that can be rooted can be air layered. But not necessarily the other way around.
We commercially layer rambutan, for example. We must get 90% or better. We’d never get that with cuttings if any at all.
Peter

I say that because of Macadamia. I have air layered lychee on a commercial level. When we tried macadamia on a small scale we got callus formation but no roots until we cut them off and treated them like cuttings. Was it a fluke??? I don't know. Also, Atemoya can be rooted from cuttings according to Australian literature. I have never gotten it to air layer successfully because it has weak wood and the layers have always gotten snapped off by wind. In theory it works, but in practice its not practical. That is why I add the caveat.

as a_Vivaldi has already written, the rootstock also has a great influence even on the quantity of fruit. not just the variety.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: When to prune young jaboticaba?
« Last post by trianglegardens on April 18, 2024, 04:19:10 PM »
I think pruning may delay fruit production, but in the end, pruned jabo trees produce more as a result of the sun hitting the caulis.
I'll only prune crossing branches for my rare ones as I want them to grow as fast as possible.
Sabara, I'll keep the lower branches clear so sun can hit the bark.

Ok so even with Sabara, should I only prune crossing branches if I want it to grow as fast as possible?

Or should I go ahead and clean up the lower and crossing branches now so it will open up the bark to more sun?

I’m not sure how old this tree is, but it’s about 9-10 inches tall.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Questions about Lilly pilly (syzygium oleosum)
« Last post by Lumi-Ukko on April 18, 2024, 04:01:46 PM »
Its probably Syzygium paniculatum if they were magenta and tasty,

https://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Syzygium+paniculatum

the trees get large, but take a while to do so, I guess it is endangered now so you should absolutely plant it out, cant speak as to the polyembrony but they are supposed to be bushy when young so I would wait

P.S. my oleosum survived 18f

Yes, identical looking fruit so must be Paniculatum. The fruit struck me as having a similar taste and texture to its cousin, the Malay Apple, only more 'lavender' flavoured.

I have the opposite issue with temperatures where March to June are in the 100-110f range and in the main bone dry with clear skies. If I can nurse them through this stage as seedlings, I'm sure the mature trees will do well here as the UV cannot be any higher than tropical Australia.

As you suggest, I'll let the seedlings grow some more, before making a decision on what to do with all the stems. The largest is about 4 to 5 inches tall currently.
