Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dragon Fruit Taste Reports
« on: November 20, 2014, 06:23:35 PM »
For the many varieties I have tried, this is an accurate description...

Take a glass of water. Carefully pour 1 teaspoon of poppy seeds into the glass of water. Now place glass into the freezer, allow water to cool to slush. Now eat your slushy poppy seed mix.

Voila! Dragon fruit.

Wait a minute... I'm missing about 8 - 10 miracle fruits from my tree out front. <goes to check security camera footage and angrily waves fist at Jeff>

I'm considering the following varieties, all of which I have cuttings of.  However, I'd like to put 3 or 4 cuttings per trellis, so a couple have to go.

Any input or recommendations are appreciated!

Here is the list:

American Beauty
Yellow
Physical Graffiti
Purple Haze
Natural Mystic
Zamorano
David Bowie
Halleys Comet
Cosmic Charlie

YOU need ONE good white flesh variety for pollinator. Mexicana and Vietnamese Giant are examples.

Halley's Comet, Physical Graffiti, and Purple Haze are closely related.  I would keep Physical Graffiti.

I don't know where Clay got "Cebra is ranked number 1 currently 2 years running".  Unless he is looking at the UC Irvine, CA Pitahaya Festival list of varieties. The UCCE uses "1" for Cebra on their list and for identification marking of cuttings. The "1" is not a ranking for taste or performance.

I'd be happy with one good pink, red, or white variety. For such a pretty fruit it is tremendously disappointing to bite into a tasteless mush.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sri Lankan Weevil = No Lychee?
« on: November 17, 2014, 09:25:56 AM »
Today was Day 1 of my new war vs. the weevil. Just ordered some beneficial nematodes to get them at the root level and just spent about 15 minutes of tranquil peace squishing the little monsters between my fingers (protected by an orange rubbery glove because, you know, I'm a sissy).

These things are impossible to spot. I spent several minutes walking around two lychee trees and could not see a single one. I then went to the car, got a big black golf umbrella, and held that open/upside down under the lychee canopy. Shake the tree fairly vigorously and voila, weevils R' Us. The little devils fall right into the canopy and then they are easy squishing from there. Hopefully if I keep this up I can somewhat decimate their population. There was a lot of them.

I have a natural mystic ripening on the counter.  Hopefully that will solve your/our problem.  I love the way they look, but need to taste some elite types.  Hoping NM is the first of many good-tasting DFs

I assume you got it from the same place I did last Sunday. I ate one right away and waited on the other until yesterday. Both were totally bland.

I just don't get it. We bought one purple/pink Dragon fruit from somewhere that was delicious and sweet. This was about a year ago. Since then I have bought Dragon fruit from various sources (stores and local nurseries where I know the variety) and it's like eating a sad, flavorless kiwi. I don't know if my taste buds changed, if I'm not eating them at proper ripeness, or what.

Kinda glad at this point that the lawn men butchered my two plants.

Maybe we'll finally get a "winter" down here in south florida. Last two years was too mild. No lychees :-(.

It might drop down to 72 tonight!!!

Break out the NY fur coats!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: I ate my first cherimoya today!
« on: October 10, 2014, 04:06:09 PM »
Many of us in CA think it is the King of Fruits.....yes over Durian!!!!!

Here you go again. Once again declaring king without ever having fresh top tier durian.  Experience with frozen Monthong does count. Its trashy, not comparable with real thing, and I would not take it even for free anymore.
How many flavors are there in top tier mango or cherimoya? 2-3 at most. How many flavors in top tier durian? Answer is a lot! It is really complex. We got custard, almonds, sweet garlic, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, etc... all at once. On this factor alone durian wins. Mango and cherimoya are juicy. Durian is creamy. What ingredient in food makes human feel really good? The answer is fat. Put a bunch of butter in an ordinary dish and instantly makes it better. Nevertheless mango and cherimoya are my top 5 fruits and I respect them highly.

ya, well, that's just like, your opinion, man

Unripe fruit IS toxic. It gives stomach aches. This is well known fact.

O... as long as you bold it then it's definitely true. Logic dictates that you've had a bad experience with a couple varieties of unripe fruits and therefore you can definitively say that all unripe fruits are toxic/poisoning the millions of people that eat them every day. OMG... what if toxic unripe fruits are the real cause of ebola!?! I said it on the internet, so must be true.

I solved that problem this year by having my 30 foot avocado not produce a single avocado. Take that, rats! NO AVOCADO FOR YOU!

".If he has the Hak Ip for 100.00, should I just get it instead of the Sweetheart at 50 dollars cheaper?"

If it was me...YES!! That's what I would buy the $100 Hak ip  ;D $50 is a lot of money to me  ;)

I wish you lived closer to me...I would sell you my Potted Hak ip...I really don't have room to plant this one in the ground

Not to open this can of worms again, but has it ever been settled whether sweetheart is just a renamed hak ip? If it's the same tree, then the difference in price would obviously be meaningless.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone tried Christmas Loquat?
« on: October 08, 2014, 06:32:59 AM »
is there reason to believe that loquat varieties for central and northern FL  wouldn't fruit in south florida...chill hours for novak, torrey?

what loquats are you growing in south florida that you'd recommend?

I have read oliver, champagne, christmas, and bradenton are good...any others?

I have a Christmas, and it flowers profusely but has not set fruit in 3 years. The first year it was in a container and it had lots albeit small fruit but now it blooms and the blooms die. I don't know if it needs cross pollination or if it's self compatible or if I need more bees. It's a cute little tree but I don't plant for ornamental value.

Mine is only a couple years old but same story - it has flowered profusely twice now and not set a single fruit. It's in a full sun spot so not sure what the story is. Both of us in Coral Springs too.

It's normal.

I'd like to buy a couple rat zappers but concerned about them getting wet in the rain - for those of you using them, how are you protecting them from Florida weather?

522
Just bought some Tanglefoot from Amazon. Hopefully that will put an end to this nonsense.

523
That area is already filled with land mines (great dane poop) - if they're not afraid of that then they're probably not afraid of a shotgun.

524
For some reason the lawn guys thought it would be a good idea to take the weed eater to my two dragon fruit vines that were growing nicely up some wood poles in the side yard. Sliced up both of them pretty good - completely severed the American Beauty from its base and sliced it up in a couple other places. Dark Star may or may not be a goner - nearly sliced through at the base. Didn't discover this until a week or two later, so I think the Beauty is beyond saving. All the segments are rather dried out and light - cut one off and put it in a pot, but it looks like it's back to square 1 with dragon fruit.

Can someone make me a sign in Creole that says don't cut here or something to that effect? These guys are dirt cheap but they are butchers.

nice haul. I've still only ever had one sugar apple before and I think it was past its prime/not an impressive specimen. I should swing by your house and relieve you of one of these beauties!
