Cold Hardy Citrus / Poncirus juice resin settling procedure?
« on: October 29, 2018, 06:53:56 PM »
Someone posted recently about putting poncirus juice overnight in a glass ( I presume in refrigerator) to let the resin or poncyrus nastiness to separate from the juice, and then you’re left with good juice. How do you separate the nasty layer from the good? Is the nastiness floating on top? Do you scoop it out with a spoon? I can’t find the post about it.

Laaz, that’s great. I went there this spring for open house and came home with an old garden rose bush and a native witch hazel. I saw no citrus growing on the property, although I may have missed something, so I assume he got seeds from somewhere. Any idea where he may have acquired the citradia seeds? I called and left a message but received no reply yet.

I called the arboretum and all they could tell me was that the trees were obtained from Woodlanders (I’ve bought citradia from them before) and that they were planted in 2009. I’ve called Woodlanders and left a message inquiring where they obtained the seeds. To be continued. Maybe.

I went to J.C. Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, NC today to see their Dunstan citrumelo and citradia trees. The Dunstan was obviously Dunstan. However, the “citradia “ which they seem to have misspelled “ poncirus trifoliata x citrus auranticum” looks like Swingle citrumelo to me. I’ve never seen actual citradia fruit before, so I can’t judge. The photos I’ve seen of it online vary greatly. I’ve seen long lumpy sour oranges before, but photos of sour oranges such as Seville seem smooth and round. Could this pear-shaped yellow fruit be a form of citradia?

I wish they had it here. I bet your market carries locally grown produce, SoCal2warm.

They’re larger than the few that I got off my tree two years ago. The coin is a USA quarter. I was in a hurry last night to go on a road trip and didn’t take time to hunt down a ruler. Sorry for the lousy post. I was just excited about what I feel is the most impressive citrus I’ve seen growing outside unprotected here where even poncirus is mostly unknown. I just wanted to share with folks I thought might care. Thanks for the criticism. Here is one of two poncirus fruit I’ve been able to grow on top of this mountain in the past 6 years. I don’t get fruit most years due to late spring freezes.

These poncirus came from a neighbor down in the valley. He said the tree has been growing beside their trailer for 30 years.

The leaves on my trifoliata trees don’t turn yellow nor do my citrumelo or citrange trees. They stay green mostly until they succumb to severe cold, low teens or single digits. Some leaves on trifoliata turn red and yellow/ orange eventually in winter with some still green at top of tree over winter. Citrange leaves freeze and wilt while green and fall off. Similar to peach and apricot, leaves drop green. My meiwa and satsumas on dragon stay green all winter although protected while they stop growing due to dormancy. My flying dragons don’t turn fall colors either unfortunately, leaves just drop green. 39 degrees here this morning, been in 40s all week, and my trifoliata and dragons are green as grass while sugar maple is colored up.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Kumquats in pots- when to take in?
« on: October 22, 2018, 06:05:27 PM »
My potted citrus are inside more than outside from now until April. Spider mites are bad. Spider mites like dry conditions.  Every now and then, put your potted trees in the tub/shower and let the shower rain on them. When not below freezing and mites are bad, take them outside and hose them down with water hose making sure to blast undersides of leaves. This and neem oil should help. Gotta stay ahead of those mites; a new generation of mites starts each week.

I bet the kumquat is to light of a framework to support the heavier metabolic needs of most other citrus. The leaves and branches on my meiwa are dainty compared to my satsumas branches.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Late blooming citrus
« on: October 20, 2018, 07:21:36 AM »
My meiwa bloomed about a month ago but it hadn’t bloomed earlier this year which I attributed to it needing the heat of summer that I don’t have much of as far as citrus is concerned. I also noticed that one of my red bud trees started blooming a few weeks ago. The southeastern US has had a lot of rain this summer with hurricanes and other random rain storms. Maybe our trees are stressed from all the rain and are blooming out of season as a result.

Sounds wonderful. More pulp to seed ratio than poncyrus means potentially more useful. I have some ichangensis seedlings with some trifoliate leaves ; I hope they grow to make nice fruit like yours.

Like Laaz said, plant it in spring to give it a head start. I tried leaving some seedling flying dragons in pots outside over winter, and they froze to death. My specimens that were planted in ground from same generation overwintering just fine with no protection. Also, I planted some seedling poncirus trifoliata that were only 12 inches high one spring and they did fine the following winter. Poncirus in ground here is just as hardy as a crabapple tree. Most winters my PT’s still have some leaves at top of tree when spring comes.

Trilogy’s tracker, it may depend on what constitutes “wet feet” for paw paw. They naturally thrive in flood planes. Also, once established, they do well with n full sun. Mine thrive well in a climate similar to yours but on top of a mountain on a sandy slope with high winds often. Maybe it’s not a burn on the leaf but a fungus or other disease. Either way, I wouldn’t worry much since paw paw is native and I’ve found need little to no care. Nice green leaves. Must get plenty nitrogen.

My lows the past three days have been in upper 40’s F, highs low 60’s. My first freeze is usually between Halloween and 11/11.

Sorry to hear of Stan’s loss. I still have one of his Kimbrough satsumas with fruit on it; maybe I’ll bring some to the expo. Laaz, did his Ichang lemon and citrumelos survive?

As a jam/jelly maker, I found this very interesting and informative. I've never had enough home-grown citrus to make marmalade ( except maybe Meiwa or satsuma), but maybe one day. I think Ben Salley in Columbia sells satsuma jam. Thanks for the ideas, Millet.

Do you have well water? Looks like calcium deposits to me. Try wetting a cloth and wipe the deposits off just to clarify that's what it is.  Could be spray residue from whatever you may have sprayed on plant. Leaves look healthy.
