Similar story and situation here in New Caledonia with the local fruit research station located in la Foa, Pocquereux. Twenty years ago, the collection was counting more than 200 different varieties of citrus, a great collection of mango, litchee, banana and avocado... but twenty years later, the place has lost more than 50 acres of orchards over the 200 dedicated to the collections and we can barely find only about 30 different varieties of citrus now ( only the most common ones ) , a dozen different varieties of mango and avocado left and that's it.... what a shame ! I remember, the catalog of mango cultivars used to count more than 200 different varieties from around the world !
Hard to tell who is responsible, but for sure a pure lack of knowledge and interest from most of the local growers and farmers, a real lack of interest from the employees ( state employees...) of the station who gave up the collections , and finally a lack of interest from the politics who have seriously cut down the budget too. Result, that station might close down in a near future. What a shame !

Quite a rare fruit also here in New Caledonia but pretty good taste, similar to a very tasty melon of Cavaillon I would say. We have two trees, one is fruiting a lot but average size fruits, the other one less fruits but huge ones that weight around the kilogram each.
Both trees are about 20 years old now and they are from seeds brought back from Perou. I will try to graft that specie this year onto last year seedlings. Any tips/info about grafting that specie are welcome.

What about grafting persimmon onto mabolo ? any tips and info welcome. I would like to graft a selected seedless variety of persimmon ( giant fuyu ) onto seedlings of mabolo I have in quantity. Persimmons are very rare in New Caledonia, and I don't know about any persimmons with seeds in New Caledonia. I have bought many persimmon and lotus seeds from different sources, but could not germinate any of them so far. So I am thinking about grafting onto mabolo to save time and efforts. I also have lots of black sapote seedlings, may be it could work too ?

Thanks for the replies. We have shipped around 300 grafter mangosteen plus about 1000 other grafted fruit trees into an evirotainer at a controled temp of 20 degrees celcius . I will keep you updated with results. We  are going to replant all the plants this weekend. They have spent 8 days naked roots but humidified and protected with newspaper. Will know in the next coming weeks wether it was a good idea or not...

I am getting ready to ship 200 grafted mangosteen plants 2 to 3 years old by plane from Philippines to New Caledonia and I still wonder what would be the best temperature to set up inside thé envirotainer knowing they gonna have to stay inside the container for about 5 days. Is 15 degrees Celsius too much ?
Also any other advices are welcome and much appreciated.

It is the beginning of the summer here in New Caledonia.

Just a few photos I took this morning of one of my mango trees. I have never seen before such a quantity of fruits on a single tree. That tree is about 30 years old now. Fruits should be ripe by December.
