I know right. The next best chance for some rain in around next week Tuesday for South Florida (Broward/Miami). My 4x 55 gal barrels are already waiting.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: who has a mature PPK/Lemon Meringue?

This past week I was thinking about a couple of these PPK mangoes I had from TT last year. Though sweet smelling and tasting with a prestine yellow exterior to match, it just comes across to my palate as.....bitter. Lemon peel bitter. I just could not love it :( . That disease looks terrible.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Looking for fibrous mango
« on: April 28, 2014, 03:18:08 PM »
Though the mangoes are not Cushman, they look very very nice. I have a Cushman inground with about 10-13 tennis ball sized fruit. Tommy Atkins seems the fit the bill best with it's touted high production and fiber.

Gunnar:
Any 5"-6" long green mango that has fiber and isn't worth eating when ripe. Most popular mangoes for this use is a mango called "John". It's everywhere and ofcourse has that "turpentine" burn/character. Yum. East Indian has that piney burn as well. Best enjoyed by slicing.

Hmm...didn't consider TA as an option. Unless Rob is trolling me. It's more productive and disease resistant than East Indian and Madame Francis? How about vigor among the three? The mango sure is pretty. I have Okrung and though it has some fiber around the seed, it's just too small for my cooking needs. Thanks though :) .

I've read on here that Kesar and Jumbo Kesar are one in the same.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Looking for fibrous mango

Specifically for mature green picking, freezing (months) and eventual cooking...(curried Trini style). Must have fiber and be very productive with good disease resistance. East Indian is very big and fibrous but am unsure about productivity / disease resistance compared to say a Madame Francis. Thoughts and recommendations appreciated.  :)

My Oxkutzcab, bought as a 7 gal going on 3 yrs in ground is pushing flowers right now. Didn't hold any fruit last year but even now I dont think the branches are strong enough to hold potato sized fruit. Won't stop me from letting it though ;) . C'mon....large --- x-large potato sized sapodillas?!?!

I've picked mature Mallikas (from my tree) with that "hooked" base (2nd mango pic). Looks a tad bit over ripe as well.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango tree 2nd bloom
« on: April 18, 2014, 11:10:05 AM »
Are the inflos just now pushing on the Julie?  Is this normal for your Julie to have multiple blooms like this?  In general,  kind of odd especially considering the weather and mostly blanket blooming we've had earlier this year.

Yep. New inflo now pushing after a full bloom that started in late December. Longest single inflo length right now is 5". The terminals that failed to set fruit are the ones pushing new bloom. Since recording my fruit trees "milestones" (if you will), for the past 3 years, the Julie has partially bloomed a 2nd time, 3-4 months after a full bloom occurance in Nov-Dec. The past 2 weeks, my area has been experiencing some lovely evening rain showers- though the accompanying wind gusts sucks.
Hopefully I'll get to taste an Imam Pasand mango with this 2nd inflo :D .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango tree 2nd bloom
« on: April 18, 2014, 09:05:00 AM »
My 8yr inground Julie (with golf ball sized fruits) and potted 3gal Imam Pasand (no fruit set) is pushing its 2nd flowering event. Anyone elses mango trees? Ice Cream held 3 mature fruit in it's 2nd bloom last year but it looks like no Ice cream this year :( .

I've seen non fruiting, huge trees with such nodules along the trunk and branches. They were caused by termites or some specie of ants. Did you even investigate to see that those growths were even made of?

I found Royal Purple was o-k. Definetly enjoyed it under ripe.

Seriously jealous of JAcob's LZ tree with fruit on it  >:( ;D ;D

Rosigold

Ate the more riped one. Fairly sweet, smooth, and truly fiberless flesh.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Yah for the Rosigold!
« on: March 25, 2014, 10:29:31 PM »
Funny this thread got revived :). Picked my first mango of the 2014 season this evening....a Rosigold. It's certainly the first tree to push flowers, and even after having mature sized fruit on it, it still pushes more flowers (extended season). You definetly have to spray copper on the flowers for it to hold. But having fruit set to early in the FL season makes it a keeper in my book. Looks like I adverted the splitting tendency it suffered last season.

Nice looking tree btw JC :) .

Shame. It's quite a nice looking tree. Does Okrung suffer this same problem?

843
More mango trees Don? You need an intervention. :D

I happened to get/buy an Esis/Isis mango last year from Excalibur and I liked it allot. It's sized like a rosigold, gets a nice yellow color and is very juicy and sweet. Had some fiber but not objectionable amounts. I may have a picture somewhere.

Sweet. I too loved the Dwarf Hawaiian last year. May make a trip next weekend.

Well, let me ask the obvious question. What mango was it ? :D

It should survive. Gashed my PSM and Neelam about 1yr ago. Both have since flourish and are bearing right now.

I like Mark's suggestion. I think I'll be using it soon. Alexi and I are in the same area so it would be interesting to see how our sprinkler water compares.
