Has anyone heard from John Painter of Jay Reynolds or any of our other Pine Island growers? Did they all make it out safe? I'm seeing some terrifying footage of Pine Island and Matlacha and I just hope none of them were trying to ride out the storm on the island.

Has anyone else noticed how good the Sunrise are this year? I've been getting them from Stanley's Mangoes on Pine Island (Bokeelia) and they have been amazing. Super sweet with a hint of tartness, creamy with a lovely spice, and probably the juiciest mangoes I've had in ages. I mean JUICY. You could probably stick a straw in these suckers and drink them!

Just tasted a Coconut Cream Mango for the first time, purchased at Truly Tropical in a mixed bag of mangos. Was not good. Tasted coconut but no sweetness at all, almost tasted like dirty water. I let it ripen on the counter for a few days after purchasing it and seemed to be ripe. Is that the normal taste??


Not at all. A properly ripe Coconut Cream should have a coconut-pineapple flavor, very sweet, just a little creamy. I love Coconut Cream, but I'll be the first to admit they can be a little temperamental. They easily get "washed out" by too much rain; every once in a while you'll just get a bad one and early ones tend to have less flavor than those at peak season. Never judge a mango on the first try. I always try to taste something different times over different seasons from different sources.

WOW, great gob! I ate mine at the beginning of August.


I had my last Maha of the season on September 17th. My first one was ready in Mid-June so a single tree gave me a 4 month long season.

Have you tasted Orange Sherbet?  If so, how does it compare to LZ or PPK?


I would describe Orange Sherbet as an Orange Flavored PPK. They are very similar in taste, but where the PPK tastes like a lemon meringue pie when properly ripe, the Orange Sherbet tastes like someone swapped the lemons with a very sweet orange.

We had couple of E-4 last year - Thanks Steve from Fruitscapes!!!


They were definitely a top tier mango. Very sweet and creamy, with hints of pineapple and coconut. Loved them!

I've not had trouble with internal breakdown with Maha. I make sure my trees get a lot of calcium when fruiting - maybe that's why.I usually eat mine when they look like this:

We are decommissioning our koi pond and plan to fill in the large hole in our yard. Since we would like to place a mango in this spot in the near future, we want to be sure the soil we use to fill the spot is the best possible for mango trees. Any suggestions on what to use and where to find it in St Pete,FL. The hole is 8’ x 12’ wide and about 4-5’ deep so we need something affordable.

Back to the mango tasting. E-4 was one of my favorites this season. I’ve only tried Super Julie once, but I did like it a lot. I can’t wait to try Butter Cream and Creme Brûlée.

I know MD Oriental Market (on 49th St and Park Blvd) has a huge produce selection. I've seen lots of exotic fruit there: Jakfruit, lychee, different mangoes...


MD has Durian. It is Monthong and usually in a freezer case across from the seafood counter.

It was at Dong A 2 on 49th Street N at 70th Ave N in Pinellas Park, FL. It’s a few blocks south of MD Oriental.

We were there early today and bought a bunch of mangoes (fruit). Mostly Lemon Zest and Orange Sherbet. I did not see any durian. But after we left Jene's we went to one of our favorite Asian markets and picked up a Musan King Durian (rare - one of the top varieties of Durian from Malaysia). It was absolutely amazing.

I've actually had some decent store mangoes: Ataulfo from Mexico tend to be good.



I appreciate Mexican Atulfo when all of my favorite mangoes are out of season and I'm jonesing for anything that is not a Tommy Atkins.   ;D

I would wait until they are at least partially yellow. If you pick lemon zest too early they taste chalky.

Easy protocol:

During non-fruiting times fertilize once monthly with an 8-4-8 or 8-3-9 fertilizer and spray with citrus minors or add essential elements every 2-3  months (if your fertilizer doesn't already have them). When they are blooming spray with copper or Agriphos (phosphate) every couple of weeks. When fruiting fertilize every other month with 0-3-16 and gypsum.


This should give them a decent amount of needed elements and keep the flowers relatively safe from anthracnose and powdery mildew.

Sorry, either its washed out or its not.  You wont have a fruit that is part washed out and part spot on...

If that is from Walter or Gary, I can pretty much guarantee its washed out and of bekow average taste.  Once you have a sample of an O-15 the way it should be (or can be...as I stated, even in good years I find the quality inconsistent), you will know why I say this.


I've had fruit that were washed out, yet they would have one spot where the flavor seemed to concentrate. And while even that spot wasn't at it's peak potential, you could tell that the fruit could be excellent. Just had this experience with a Coconut Cream this weekend. 2 weeks ago I had some amazing Coconut Cream. This weekend the one I tried - from a different region than the previous fruit- was washed out. Yet it had one small section of the fruit that seemed to have a higher concentration of flavor that reminded me how good they could taste.

When my Mallikas start to show some yellow, I start testing them on the tree. Lift the mango slightly bending the stem. If it is ready, it will pop off in your hand. With Mallika, they will probably need a few more days in a warm spot after that. If you eat them before they turn completely yellow, when they still have a hint of green, you should get a flavor that is a mix of melon and tangerine sherbet. Most of the ones I've tried from anywhere but my own tree have been a bit too ripe. They are still good, but they lose that tangerine sherbet quality that I really like. Despite previous claims that you can pick them green and let them ripen for weeks, I've found if picked too soon, they have a bit of a vegetable taste when ripened.

My top three were Green Skin, D104, and Kuhn Po Ang Bak. Oh, wait, those are Durian and I'm still in Malaysia...no wonder I missed this...Florida next.


Bring back some of those Durian to Florida. We're planning to get some Mu something other than the usual Monthong and it's going to cost us $10/pound for a frozen durian.
