Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Citrus series Mangoes Taste Report
« on: June 23, 2018, 12:29:35 PM »
Yes Thank You for the report!! I’ve been wondering about most of these..The Xeswan I had last year was delicious, I think Walter said it translated to “White Jade”.(I didn’t know they were going to release it either)

Oh nice I wanna try the ah ping.

It’s a new favorite of mine since last year!! (Made MY top 10 last year)I was so excited for this one, I cut into it way too early & now sad & upset that I couldn’t wait 😩😤

153
You aren’t the only one!!

Many early season mangoes have been bland this year. Rosigold can be really good, and Angie can easily best a carrie -- and many other mangoes -- or it can be bland. I would hold any opinions in abeyance until you get to sample a representative specimen of both.

Surprised that your duncan was good. Those are normally bland early season.

The really early(before all these recent rains really started) Duncans, Edwards,a Simmonds, & a Rosigold I had from Alex were really flavorful and surprised me how much Punch they packed for being so early. I thought they were way better than some regular season mangos of the same varieties!!

155
I personally wouldn’t rule out Florigon..the Simmonds I recently had from Alex (Squam) was exceptional delicious & took me for a surprise after the first 2 I had already went bad..Simmonds I think falls into the sweet, tart, full flavored category but I was also told recently that Alex is considering top working due to disease problems. Haven’t had Hindi Bessenara, peach, torbet, Falan, okrung, or Wester. (Agree where you put Jean Ellen).
As for stand outs for me- Ah Ping, Dupuis Saigon, Simmonds, & Florigon. I liked the Carabao I had too but think it falls into the “mild/one note” Category

Thank You for posting! Possible to have this one filmed also?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: TransAtlantic Bare-root Mango trip
« on: April 29, 2018, 02:54:22 AM »
In a month I will take mango trees across the great water, bare root.  (Florida to West Africa). Never done this before. Transit time will be about 48 hours from bare root to replanting so I don't expect any but am open to suggestions from those with experience.  Raining season is just starting and I am relying on it (no irrigation).  The big vision begins...

What supplements have you decided to give them after their initial shock from being bare rooted? I’ve seen others on here use & suggest SuperThrive. (I use RealGrowersRecharge with very high recovery and success rate, I highly highly recommend it)

Before you germinate the Jaboticaba seeds, do you let the seeds dry out or do you plant them fresh like you would cocao seeds?

How long have you had it? And is it in a pot/container? & if so what size?

I’ve removed them from the mother plant when they were still young barely breaking soil for the first time. The sizes you have them at should have them bounce back quicker than the size I take them!

Sounds more of a marketing strategy to appeal more to the public. I don’t like name changes either (like Fairchild Ruby/J12/Super Julie) but I understand why whether it be because of confusion of similarities in names or to better market other varieties.
I’m still going to call it Seacrest 😆 just like I call “Super Julie” J12 still.. & taste is definitely different for each person.. some have it in there top 10, I personally would put it in the pile of just another okay mango that would hold me over if there weren’t other varieties of my top favorites available.

8-9 year old seedling starting to bloom again!! (This the 4-5 time!! Practically every month that we’ve a cold front, so since November!!!) And it’s holding lots more fruit than the single mango it produced last year!

Wasn’t expecting anything else to flower but seen my Venus flowering again. Hoping these panicles don’t get destroyed by powdery mildew like all the flowers before

Duncan, Florigon, Maha, Sweet Tart, & Pickering are the first to come to mind.. (Alex recommended these to me)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dot mango dying in SoCal
« on: March 21, 2018, 04:19:32 PM »
Here’s a picture of my small DOT graft. It bloomed this year and is holding small fruit. The graft is very small so I’ll probably remove all the fruit so the graft doesn’t die back.

Simon

That’s awesome!! Love your projects simon 😁

Dwarf cavendish? They are ideal for pots.

Yes, I also have dwarf cavendish in a pot.. as a matter of fact all my bananas in my collection are in pots and do well as long as they’re watered and fertilized.. my truly tiny didn’t start flowering until I gave it high  potassium fertilizer.
