Owari Satsuma ripeness

Are these ready to eat?  Some are still half-green, some bright orange. I remember some varieties are ripe when still green, but I forget which ones.



I'm not sure if I can go by calendar based timing because things got confused in my winter greenhouse.

Well I got hungry and answered my own question.  Ate a bunch of them, they're great.  The yellow ones had the best balance of sweet & sour.

Owati satsuma has been around for a long time.  Some ripen earlier that Owari. Miyagawam,  XShan, Louisiana early and early StAnne are all eary ripening satsumas. Miyagawa and Xie shan are at the top of my list.  Armstrong Early is also an early ripening but the worst of the bunch. Kimbrough is another satsuma, I do not know if it is available any more. In the future when they are getting soft sample one.

My owari are still decidedly green and not yet easy to peel.  Flavor, while sweet, isn't top notch.  Here in the Houston, Tx area they still need a few more weeks.

Citrus are ripe when orange or yellow, limes included. What citrus is ripe when Green?

I have a young Xie Shan satsuma (early variety) with still green fruit. Even with plenty of water I noticed the fruit getting 'puffy'. I cut one off and peeled it. Very orange flesh inside but peel was very green outside. Not full flavored yet but it's getting there. It was not sour.  Tom

Satsuma and some mandarin varieties mature before the peel changes to an orange color. -Millet

I have picked my Satsumas before they were ripe and enjoyed them, not as much as when they ripen. Limes are picked , sold , and consumed unripe and consumers don't bat an eye. Which Mandarin varieties have you experienced ripe before the peel turns orange/yellow.

 I tried a couple of Owari today and they were surprisingly sweet for this early. None have completely orange peal yet. Even the worst of the bunch Armstrong seemed sweeter than usual.

bush2beach, Armstrong satsumas pretty much best when still green.  it just doesn't get cold enough, early enough down here to turn their color
owari satsuma, ruby red grapefruit, sunburst tangerine, meyer lemon, ponkan mandarin, st ann satsuma,  gold nugget mandarin, nagami kumquat, pineapples

This is my Satsuma. Fruits are pretty big. It's probably not Owari. I am going to taste one soon. A couple of them are ready.

Is that a Lowes/Home Depot tree?  Looks like it from the tag.   Mine have been very healthy.

Yes, it is Lowe's. And it fruited the same year I got it. Which was nice. But it doesn't say on the tag what kind of satsuma.

I might be guessing that mine is owari based on its appearance and fruit.  I'll have to double check.  My fruit is smooth though it looks different from yours.  It is also from either home depot or lowes.

Skin is yellow, flesh a pale green.  :D
