eugenia repanda!
« on: January 26, 2015, 11:19:54 PM »
The eugenia repanda (pitanga-jambo or ñangapiré negro) are ripening now, the last year I could try just 2 of them, but now half of the plants produced fruits (at different times, there are even some of them with flowers and fruits)... they should be black when ripe, but I tasted 2 red unripe ones and they were very good!!!, like a bing cherry (very different taste to e. uniflora -and I love unifloras- ).

The most interesting feature to me is that they can fruit in full shade.

If you like acid, small (1 to 1.5 cm) and/or myrtaceae fruits, you must have it :-D

Very unique looking fruits; how is the pulp - seed ratio?

Seeds are a bit smaller than e. uniflora, maybe 30% seed / 70% pulp?

I never tasted e. stipitata, I guess they are less acid. Acidity not bother at all, I think that makes them interesting, like an orange or Cherry.

Really: red e. repandas are identical to a bing cherry to me. I should wait some days to taste the black/fully ripe ones

Thanks for the report. I have some plants and was wondering if they are worthy of planting in the ground.

Hi huertasurbanas,

Is E. repanda a smaller bush that you think can be grown successfully in a pot?

Oscar and Tomas, they fruit in a pot without problems (even in a small 3L pot) like a surinam cherry (but less drought resistant), and I planted a lot of them because I think it is a very good fruit.

Marcos, what´s the tree age when it started to fruit?
I tryed to grow her two times, but in both the tree died. Maybe I will give it a new try...

You should... one of mines died because of lack of water during the winter.

They fruit from 4 years old aprox, just like a surinam cherry

I tasted many more fully ripe black ones and the flavour is different than a bing cherry, very good but it has its own personality, I am tasting more ones and cant find what reminds me... I hope next crops would be bigger fruits

Yes: they are less acid (they have to be really black), I like the e. matosii too :-D, but I am looking for mexican garcinia if you have some (I sent you seeds of this eugenia repanda species some days ago)

I will take more photos, they use to be darker than the one on this photo.

Doesn't seem like HuertasUrbanas offered seeds this year. Is anyone else growing fruiting trees yet? Should be in season now for Northern hemisphere growers.
Eugenia luschnathiana = CURUIRI.    Talisia esculenta = PITOMBA
I do not recommend people deal with Fruit Lovers, Prisca Mariya or Fernando Malpartida

Right now in season, here are first fruits cut, taste very good like sourish sweet cherry. however not that much pulp you would expect the seed is fairly big :)
