Pink guava in pot.
« on: April 24, 2015, 02:03:49 AM »
I have found some crafted pink guava in a nursery.
I live in Japan zone 9A 9B so I won't plant it directly in the ground.
Has anyone got it to fruit in pot? I would like to read your experience.
Strawberry guava is much easier, but the taste is somewhat more tart and sometime quite bad.
Thank you.

I have done it , and it's fairly easy to grow and maintain in pot

Bigger the pot, the better the results are , I am growing my guava in wine barrel , with good results

The tree is really talk and thick , I think 6-7 feet from soil level , and get enough guava that is good enough for family and give away some

jbaqai Could you post a picture please? I have both Pink and Strawberry guava trees in pots. I bought them at same time. They are 4y.o. old now. The Strawberry guava produced first fruits (not a lot, hope to get more this year) 2 years ago but Pink guava is stubborn. I think I bought a seedling and this year when it should start producing. I noticed a flower yesterday so hopefully I will have to taste one. I prune it every winter/spring because it gets large. I should re-pot it I know but it seems the tree is quite happy in it.

Thank you, I'm going to order it next week. Do you use any fertilizer?

Guava and sugar apple are hit and miss with me. I have a guava 6' tall and one 5' tall in the ground that hasn't bloomed, and several 2' tall that produced in pots.

My largest that is fruiting is a pink variety in a 7 gal pot I use to shade my AC unit and I have no plans on putting it in the ground. Some of the smaller ones at 2' are pink (not named) and Mexican cream, maybe 6 of them, all blooming or with fruit recently put in the ground. The only small ones (2-3') left in a pot are a Mexican cream and an Allahabad, both blooming or fruiting.

I'll put a pic up later on today.

From left  a 2.5' stick Allahabad with a bloom, pink (recently put into the ground) with several fruits and blooms on it and Mexican Cream with maturing fruit on it coming out of the pot soon.

Pink Guava

The tropical ping guava from laverne nursery , it's actually fruited very next year and this plant is with me for almost 4-5 years

I do heavy pruning every year in spring to encourage new growth and branching

This is not the best angle for th tree , but my backyard is overstuffed lol

Here's an air-layer I grew that had a pair of seedless fruit. The tree was about 2 ft tall. Those were the only seedless fruit it produced. The container is about 12 inches in diameter.
