You can plant closer than recommended for commercial.

How far apart were you thinking?  Are you considering planting close to form a hedge?

No not a hedge, just as close as possible while not affecting productivity or having to go insane pruning all the time.

My neighbor has two avocados about 8 feet from each other. They are old 30 years plus and quite tall, he never prunes them.

wow 8 feet is about 2.5 meters! That's pretty close, would be great for me. In fact it opens up a new possibility - what's minimum distance between an avocado and a níspero?

Plant the avocado as far apart as you can. and put the nispero in between them a small type .

I don't have specific experience with the two types mentioned but avocados can grow big in the tropics and they are vulnerable to root disease.  So, we plant 8m apart.

true, different climate. 8 meters seems like a lot though - i was thinking 4. are you talking seedling trees or grafted?

I agree, 4 meters should be far enough.

8 - 10 feet apart sounds good to me.

sounds like 3 meters (9'10") is a good compromise. the níspero and pollock are already in the ground about 4.5 meters apart. i was thinking maybe i'd put the choquette in between, but sounds like that would be pushing it. so, maybe 2-3 meters from the níspero on the other side?

I think you should follow Peter's advice for long term benefits.  3 meters means plants have 1.5 meter to go before they touch each other. That is crazy short. Also try to plant on the slope for good drainage.

The difference between asking the "minimum" and the "best".

you're all right :)
I'm going 3.5-4 meters from the níspero, which will be 7.5-8 meters from the pollack. Hopefully not a bad compromise. This is on a steep slope, so no problem there.
