FL frosts and freezes 2017
« on: December 31, 2016, 02:17:37 PM »
here in a definite cold pocked zone 9a, we stayed at 32F freezing last night for what seemed like 5hr.  (I think JFK in NYC stayed at 33F...lol)

there was no wind, and humidity was at 99%....I'm waiting to see if there is delayed damage on the garcinia from Luc, which is full of new leaves...also the mulberries have fruits on them still...and jaboticabas flowering all over....Myrciaria strigipes and pitangatuba have flowers and fruits holding...if they got damaged, it will take a few days to notice...but I will post pics and updates.

That is not good to hear.  I hope your plants are not damaged.  Interesting to have that much humidity at those temperatures.  In coastal southern California, we have our coldest temperatures as humidity drops.  Dryer air can't hold enough heat in and so the heat dissipates quickly.  The worst case is when we have a cold high pressure system develop, or after a low pressure strong storm from the north moves through, and then the wind stops in the middle of the night.  Temperatures drop like a rock!  If we have high humidity, it is usually enough (along with clouds) to keep the temperatures mild.

pretty sure the plants made it through with zero damage...was just barely 32F, for maybe 5hr...almost seem like they enjoy it.

Hope you don't end up with any damage Adam, stay warm. Here Ca. we have been down to 31.5F so far with maybe another cold event coming this week all depends on if rain comes or not!

I'm only 10 miles south of you, Adam, in Maitland and the temps didn't drop below 40F for me.  I'm on the south side of a lake as well, so that mitigates the cold.  I'm going to miss this micro-climate once I leave this house and move to Maryland soon!  Selling almost all my plants but keeping the jabos and a few other things.

Make a greenhouse in Maryland!

I couldn't imagine giving up my tropicals and moving to a snow zone.  :(

Holy crap dude. You are right up the road from me(45min or so), our low was mid 40s. I am actually worried I wont get enough chill hours for my cherries and apples this year or since a ton of my trees are blooming, that we will get a cold snap and everything gets burned.

Hi, I heard Maryland has "rain tax." What's up with that? ( Sorry, off topic).

I've noticed heavy mango blooms at far north as St Pete. I'm hoping the rest of the winter is gentle enough that fruit set isn't affected. So far we haven't dropped below 44 and even that was for only a handful of hours.

Looks like my lychee flower spikes might get toasted on Friday. Hoping the forcast inches up a couple degrees

i just check the weather for Ocala, it's about same as mine (I gave up on checking the weather stations near me, because they are all about 5-10F warmer than me)...but for the last freeze they predicted 35F, we got 32F...you were probably at 28-30F if you're in a cold spot in Ocala.

I think this one is gonna be even colder.

I don't think I have hit freezing yet this season. My back yard is a little protected. I might put a space heater under the lychees but they are too tall to cover. I'm assuming the lychees and the jackfruit will get burned back some. I think the mangoes should be ok as long as the temp doesn't go lower than expected.

I bought a propane heater for the ultra tropical greenhouse.

I would be much more worried about the mango and jackfruit than the lychee. I don't even protect my lychee from freezes anymore if I know they are coming. Mango and jacks are much more susceptible to cold damage.

Does it come with an lcd monitor? Or must it be purchased separately?

the one i got came with LCD, but the one I posted in the link doesn't seem to come with one...my friend picked it up at costco, and let me reimburse him for what he paid....lol seemed like he undercharged me...I was amazed at what I got for what I paid...less than $100 for the whole set up....

I purchased one of these about a year ago.  They are very handy for keeping track of temperatures that can adversely affect our fruit trees.  The LCD display makes it very easy to monitor the temperatures outside and to keep records of your microclimate.  If you register the weather station with AcuRite, they will keep track of your data every month and you can access this for reference.  The unit itself is only suppose to keep about 30 days of records.  Some people have had problems with the weather station keeping linked to the WiFi, I have had some connection issues, but they have been intermittent.  Overall it has been a good system.

I had an acurite for about 2 years before one of the sensors went bad.....u have to buy another whole unit as the sensors themselves aren't replaceable
