Why is African Pride atemoya so popular in San Diego?
« on: January 06, 2018, 02:42:59 PM »
I have one spot in my yard for an atemoya. I want something productive but also top tier in terms of taste.

Many of the nurseries in the southern california region focus on African Pride. Is this a tasty variety or its simply easy to grow but loses out on the flavor you would get from other varieties?

Easy to grow and very productive
Taste avarege but above geffner

I only have room for one atemoya tree. Which one would you reccomend?

Adding to JF’s first point it also doesn’t need hand pollination like many other varieties (at least here). I top worked mine to pinks mammoth for what it’s worth.

If I was only having one tree and I had to choose one I have tried (and I haven’t tried many) I might go with Paxton prolific for the combination of self pollination, number of fruit and taste. JF and others have mentioned a bunch of varieties that they grow that I have never even heard of so can no doubt give a much more informed response.

Go to Ong's Nursery.  They may have samples of different atemoyas.  I tasted AP, Lisa, and Geffner last week.
