Pruning Pometia Pinnata (Fijian Longan)
« on: January 12, 2018, 03:47:29 PM »
Greetings,
Do you have some experience with pruning Pometia Pinnata, in order to keep this large tree, between 3 to 5 meters. I would love to control and keep  the height of the tree low.

Does anyone have experience with pruning this tree?

Ps: Happy New Year
Yohann

They are very tall and fairly narrow crowned trees with soft brittle wood. They snap off in strong winds like from cyclones and become shorter and bushier trees. I have seen them sawn off and re-sprout to form a shorter and broader tree. I doubt you have to be overly careful

Trunks are a little fluted but not buttressed. They get very big still and have extensive and shallow root systems,

I found this pdf talking about pruning...
http://www.tropicalfruits.com.my/pdf/Fijian-Longan-k-flower.pdf

"Older trees have a moderately good self-pruning ability while young trees grow low branches. Regular cutting back seems to encourage subsequent fruiting. Trees for fruit production can be topped to keep them shorter and more spreading. Trees grow rapidly, 1-2m/year."
