Once they turn red they are good to eat ime. have eaten green ones that were tasty. They do seem to taste even better if allowed to sit around a few extra days.

They will color up the red color.  For sweetest flavor, they will sag (the stem that attaches fruit to trunk).  They can be picked when still erect (stem attaching fruit to trunk) but will have more of a subacid component.

Once my trees started they have continued to produce for 2 years now.
Hopefully yours will do the same and you will get plenty of practice.
I like them best with some red. If you squeeze them a little you can feel when they are
firm and not quite ready. I usually eat a few skins also for the antioxidents and that
also has an unusual flavor much different then the flesh.

The red hybrids are best when they are almost black. Mine are fruiting now, as are the escarlets, grimals and sabara. These 4 varieties fruit very frequently with scarlet the most frequently producing but sabara and red hybrid just keep producing flushes of fruit also.

I wait until my Fruit has just a bit of give when you gently squish it. At this stage, it is super sweet. The more squishy it is, the sweeter it becomes until the Fruit loses it shiny sheen. As soon as it becomes dull and often before, it will drop from the tree.

The fruit tastes different depending on the stage of ripeness you pick it at and it’s very enjoyable to pick several at different stages of ripeness to get the full range of flavors that this wonderful fruit can encompass.

Some people will prefer it less ripe as it will have a more firm texture and higher acidity.

Since your tree only has a single fruit, you will have to wait for it’s next crop to experiment some more but text me if you’re in the area and you can sample some off my small tree.

I consider Jaboticabas a pain in the ass to eat because the flesh clings to the seed tenaciously but OMG, if you like sweet fruit, it’s absolutely amazing! Not just the sweetness but the flavor is just out of this world.

I’ve I’ve given some fruit to some of my friends and they said the flavor, sweetness and sugar acid balance is reminiscent of mangosteen. I personally don’t pick up that tropical acidic component of the purple mangosteen but when picked at the proper stage, the sugar acid balance and the texture definitely reminds me of purple mangosteen.

The best thing about Jaboticaba is that it can produce so much fruit with multiple crops throughout the year.

Yes. First "crop" of 6. Had a single fruit in early summer then started flowering again. Good luck!

I love the sweet component in jabs but while I do yard work and such, I love to chew the "fuzz" off the seeds...it has a nice tartness to round out the sweetness.

The variety I posted pictures of is from the Red Hybrid. The plant was grown from seeds I ordered from Oscar a while back.

I’m also growing Sabara, Grimal and two more I can’t reme at the moment.
