Hey Asaffron, do you have that giant Mexican tree for sale?
Floridagreenman, do you have that big red tree for sale?
I am in CA; and trying to collect some annona trees. Anybody can sell and ship sugar apples trees like those two above please let me know. I'd appreciate that.
Merry Christmas!

Hi,

I have two varieties, a green one from Brazilian seeds and a purple/mauve one from SE Asia seeds.

I prefer the green one. They are sweeter and when at top ripeness,
they are simply delicious with elusive exotic flavors that remind me
of vanilla and/or cinnammon.

The mauve ones are also good, but tend to be more watery.
The flesh near the skin often gets a pink tinge which makes
the fruit very attractive.

The only downside is that they are quite seedy.

The best squamosa I have ever tasted was a big green in Koh Samui, Thailand. One of the best fruits I've eaten in my life. No idea about the cultivar. My guess is it was just a seedling.

Adao, yours looks delicious!!

Not all Red Sugars are the same.  I sell both types to dozens of customer and 90 percent prefer the Big Red over the green ones after they taste it. . My Big Red is not watery at all.  Sounds like you have inferior red ones in your area.

I vote for Noel's big red.  I hope my big red seedlings produce fruit that good.  It's by far the best sugar apple that I've ever had.

Although I have never tasted neither one, Noel's Big Red and Adam's Giant Mexican are at the top of my list.

Would I be better off with 2 atemoya trees, or 1 atemoya and 1 Big Red sugar apple? ???  Do you have to hand-pollinate the Big Red?

It depends on what you like. I would prefer two good quality atemoyas.

You don't have to hand pollinate Big Red but I think if you do you would get even larger yields. It already seems to bear a lot without hand pollination.

I would not say an atemoya will replace a sugar apple in terms of flavor. There's enough difference between the two
to justify growing both.

Then 2 atemoyas and 1 sugar apple sounds about right! :)

I forgot about the rubber sugar apple!  It's nice, with a uniquely gefner like texture.

It would be interesting to cross something like big red, with the rubber sugar apple.

I have both, so I will try this season.

If we can grow the Pet Pak Chong Annona like here in Thailand then can we also grow the red Annona Squamosa or do they need another climate ?

Adam, this cross is at the very top of my list as I already posted in one of your posts on Annonas. But I only have a Kampong Mauve and it's not looking good right now. If it survives this winter, I might be able to try a KM-Chewy SA cross. It would be interesting to compare the results of a BR-Rubber SA and a KM-Rubber SA. In a few years from now...
