Taste of Mabolo (Diospyros blancoi)
« on: September 30, 2013, 05:57:49 AM »
Just ate this seedless mabolo fruit (aka velvet persimmon). The taste and texture remind me of pear. It is less juicy and more creamy than pear. Quiet pleasant. Size is about the same as a regular persimmon, except more flattened.

Oscar,

Mabolo is native in the Philippines.  It is also the logo of our Rare Fruit Group in the Philippines. The seedless mabolo really taste like pear but with a strong smell and less juice. Used the rootstock to graft persimmon. They are not compatible.  But the wood is quite expensive.  Furniture made from mabolo are highly prized.

It has been some time since I've had one.  In my mind's eye, I remember the flesh being more yellowish or even orangeish. Is white fleshed the norm.  The fruit looks pretty good, better than what I remember.

The flavor of the fruit from a seedling tree at the Fruit & Spice park was reminiscent of a fancy cheese.

The other day I tried one of these fruits from my neighbors tree for the first time.  It was fantastic...it had 2 seeds and was the size of a tennis ball...I shoulda planted this one long ago... I tried another one long ago from another tree and it was horrible.

No cheese taste here. I think the cheesy part is the smell, not the taste. Really it doesn't smell like cheese, but hard to describe has it's own unique strong smell ( i keep them outdoors) , and maybe cheese is the closest comparison?

Is this a fruit that a persimmon-hater might nonetheless enjoy?
Já, ég er að rækta suðrænar plöntur á Íslandi. Nei, ég er ekki klikkuð. Jæja, kannski...

Mabolo is completely different tasting than persimmon. But i wouldn't want to predict what you might or might not like given that persimmons are one of my favorite fruits, and durians, which you think are "only good for the trash can"  :o, i find incredible!

Blasphemy!
It tastes very different. A number of diospyros taste very different from others. Range of mabolo seems to be from chalky cheesey apple to pineapply pear.

What about grafting persimmon onto mabolo ? any tips and info welcome. I would like to graft a selected seedless variety of persimmon ( giant fuyu ) onto seedlings of mabolo I have in quantity. Persimmons are very rare in New Caledonia, and I don't know about any persimmons with seeds in New Caledonia. I have bought many persimmon and lotus seeds from different sources, but could not germinate any of them so far. So I am thinking about grafting onto mabolo to save time and efforts. I also have lots of black sapote seedlings, may be it could work too ?

Did you stratify the seeds before planting, they need about 2-3 months of cold stratification (in vegy crisper section of refrigerator) before planting! ;)Sounds like should be compatable but scions need to be dormant!

Thanks for the info but I would like to give a quick update as I have one graft that took between persimmon and mabolo. I don't know if it will last until it can bear fruits, but so far so good. Will post a picture of the result asap.
