Trees from the North of Republic of Congo
« on: February 27, 2013, 12:28:39 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has picked up this book from Kew:
http://congotrees.rbge.org.uk/

The book looks interesting but I am wondering if there is a lot more "meat" in the book than offered on the website.  I'd appreciate a review from anyone who might have it.

I think friends of Guanabanas wrote it. They were missionaries who had to leave years ago due to violence and instability. No one is going to get fruit tree seeds out of the DRC for a very long time.

The book you are talking about Katie was written well over 20 years ago by Roy Danforth. The book being referred to now was written in 2011. So 2 different books.

I'm a little surprised the book is so recent, given the extent of civil unrest for the past 15 years. Have you seen the latest travel advisory? http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1104.html

So, who's gonna go get some seeds? :) I'm hoping to go pick up my daughter in about 8 months, but ain't no way I'm risking transporting seeds out of there, even with the right paperwork. I can just hear it now, "Well, we went through Hell to adopt this baby girl, but then they confiscated her exit visa because Katie tried to transport some seeds out..."

Guess you'll have to be satisfied with your Congolese baby. I guess that's a lot better than any fruit seed! Oh wait, babies come from seeds also!  ;)

Interesting artical from the National Geografic Magizine
March 2913  "The left bank" The area south of the congo river.
A study of the Bonobo apes at the wamba reasearch camp
+they were observd eating the fruits of the boleka  trees
small grapelike morsels withpapery husks. Then in agrove of
musanga trees they were stuffing their mouths with fruit,
pulpy and green
there is a picture of a group sitting around feasting on a
junglesop. I couldnt help being reminded of a similar group
of frinds pigging out at the fruit and spice park
