Is greening in fruit or seeds?
« on: November 22, 2019, 09:02:44 PM »
I think I learned on this forum a while back that they have determined that greening disease is not found or transmitted by fruit or seeds. Am I right?

Citradia, I am not sure about the fruit, but I know for sure that HLB is not transmitted through the seeds.,

I have been told by LSU/USDA that seeds are not capable of transporting hlb. Fruit on the other hand is.....hence the quarantines list fruit as a no no. I have yet to get an explanation as to why seed is not capable of transporting hlb........

As written above citrus seeds do not transmit HLB, also  none of the true virus diseases (Tristeza, psoriasis ect.) . are also not transmitted through the seed.

If that’s the case why are California citrus sold in Florida supermarkets and I assume likewise

Remember this: MOST Grapefruit come true from seed. Hybrids....do not necessarily come true. Ruby Red is famous for coming true.

CA & FL and other places have Certified producers. As long as the fruit is from a certified producer and all the requirements are met for shipping, quarantine specifications are met,  there is a way to market the indistries product.

Dihvac,  California produces citrus cultivars that are for eaten out of hand.  Florida growers dominantly produce, citrus cultivars for juicing and not for eating out of hand.  Therefore, most of the eatable citrus in Florida are California oranges.

In order to have greening you need to have  both infected plant source (fruit etc.) and psyllid insect.
Fruit batches  from infected regions are obligatory  treated with powerful insecticides.
