Thanks for the kind words.

The fence is to keep the deer at bay. When I first started developing the land with citrus tree, the furry friends decimated everything. Yuzu lime is their favorite.

Yes. I'm going to look into the Malaysian Red Guava to replace my dead Fung Tung Starfruit courtesy of the underground furry friend.

Stan. Yup... some passion fruit plants are just flower. "Frederick" is the one I have which the flowers will turn into fruit. Fruit will bear into the winter (for this area), but the later fruit are much smaller and the content inside is not as great.

forumfool. The 2 plants were planted November 2013. They covered the entire 30-35  ft trellis fence (8ft high) that I built. Winter 2013-2014: some frost damage. Winter: 2014-2015 no frost damage. Winter 2015-2016: frost literally bounce off the plant structure; vine are so thick.

Lady living down the street (lower elevation) said her passion fruit plant was fried.
My thought on why there was no frost damage. (1) property sit at the base of the hill (warmer than the valley during the winter. (2) healthy plants; believe the plant cell are thick due to liquid fertilizing (fox farm grow big) and azomite feeding every 3 weeks from March to October.

After the winter, some of the older leaves turned yellow which I plucked out to increase air flow.

Agree with Shaneatwell. The fruits get better when the plant get older. However, if you water, fertilize, and add azomite, the fruits will be amazing (big and juicy). My 2 plants took the cold like a champ without any frost die back.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: I Got a Valencia Pride Mango!
« on: July 13, 2016, 12:32:52 AM »
My Valencia Pride on Florida rootstock grew like a snail too, but still alive. I'm not looking forward as a producer but more like an ornamental tree. I built a 6'x12'  garden bed next to it. LOL

I planted 8 mango trees of different varieties 3 year ago. 5 died especially during flowering. Valencia grows like a snail. Nam doc Mai is swallowed up by the passion fruit vine but still alive. Ugly Betty doesn't look too good. Branches blacking and drying but managed to put some new growth at the lower trunk. All came from Toptropical. All their tree are healthy when I got it. I believe the root stock is the problem.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My bay area Papaya. 3rd summer.
« on: July 03, 2016, 02:46:06 PM »
Hey Stan.

My Mexican Papaya took off after a month of planting from the 1.5 gallon that I bought from Lowes. The trunk is like 3-4 inch thick in 2 month with fruits hanging like crazy. Unfortunately the furry friend ate the root. If you want your plant to take off, my suggestion would be to have one plant only. Lucky I still  have my 2 T.R. Hovey papaya. They are fruiting now.

This year I started seed of Tainung #1. I planted 6 plants onto the ground. 3 doing extremely well; 1 got eating by the deer but still have the lower trunk; 2 are iffy because of lesser sun light exposure. I'm really happy with the result. If all go right, I expect the papaya to be like 5-8 ft by the end of October 2016.  According to forum literature, Tainung papaya are fast grower.

I got 3 extra plants if you want for free. i go fishing all the time up north and drive past your city on the way. Just let me know.

I harvested ice cream banana from February-March this year. Banana flags appeared on the month July last year. No banana flag yet even though the trunks are twice as big comparing to last year. I put 0-10-10 fertilizer last week. Hopefully I see a flag by mid July. They are pretty tasty too.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Avocado trees big issue Please help!

Indeed. It looks like some kind of disease which I don't know. What you can do is to destroy the ones that are affected and move the healthy ones to  a different location on your land.

1. root rot
2. tree is not getting enough water (under water, they need deep watering).
3. either way, leaves and branches are not getting the water they needed. that is why they turn black/brown.

My 7ft. Honey Hart has zero fruit. Mine had like maybe 10 flowers total. How in the world do you get that many fruits? Anyway I turned the tree into a 4ft.

Hello all,

If you don't want root rot for your papaya plant during the winter season, use a black plastic sheeting (or thick black garbage bag) 2.5'x2.5' to keep the water out. Cut a line half way and place the sheeting at the base of the trunk. Place 4-5  heavy stones to keep the sheeting in place. The set up will keep the root dry and warm for the winter. Also, shovel some dirt at the base to create a mount prior to the sheeting, so the water can run  outward. 100% success on my 4 plants (2 brazilian, 2 T.R Hovey). Yup, I'm seeding my tainung papaya now. Good luck!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone growing the M & N cherimoya ?
« on: March 04, 2016, 02:39:13 PM »
I have one planted at my sister house. The one growing at my house got killed by the strong wind; it snapped near the graft and never recovered. The leaves are huge (as wide as my face) if the tree is happy. The fruits are conical with protruding skin similar to el bumpo; the fruits are pretty with very green skin even when mature. The 2 trees I got are from Alex from Papaya Tree Nursery a few years back when I visited the Green Scene Fair down Fullerton. Below is the accurate picture of M&N. You have to scroll all the way down at the page to see the M&N

« on: December 26, 2015, 03:35:42 PM »
I could not find the tread, so I'm posting it again. I know loquat is one of them. I need a few more fruit tree for my friend to decide. I will be cutting down 3 of her ornamental trees (12-15 ft) which will open up my sunlight. It just the neighbor's tree are the problem. Thanks in advance to the many experts.
