Turmeric !
« on: August 05, 2017, 10:13:31 AM »
You can find turmeric roots at an India grocery store like Patel near me.
Bravo markets also carry it

Easy to grow
This should be a landscaping plant. Leaves look much nicer than ginger leaves and it grows easier at least for me. Just  shallow plant and throw wood chips on top. It broke through three inches wood chip for me.

Thanks for the post, I'm going to try to grow some. I've been taking Turmeric for inflammation and it seems to work great. I also juice ginger and make ginger tea with honey before I go fishing because it helps me with nausea.

Like I said easier to grow than ginger  and leaves look better. Hispanic markets might carry it too. I have not seen it in Chinese supermarket near me but obviously it is an Indian item so those mkts have it. OptiMSM very good for inflammation, Kala and Jarrow have it at Amazon where you can read the customer reviews. 1000+ reviews and testimonials for Kala flakes at Amazon. Kala flakes over Kala powder. http://tinyurl.com/y8w9fgrk

Turmeric looks great, but sometimes the leaves die off completely, at least on mine. Kind of like curcuma, which loses it leaves during the winter when the days get shorter. It comes back though! Also growing ginger and galangal. Ginger grows great for me in the shade of a jabo tree and some palms, with plenty of water.

Very nice! I'm learning to cook Cambodian food after a visit there earlier this year. I planted tumeric, galangal (greater & lesser) and lemongrass in my yard a few weeks ago to give me a ready supply of ingredients. My tumeric hasn't taken off like yours has. How much sun exposure does yours get? I think mine may need a bit more shade.

I am growing Turmeric and ginger also for many years but never use any.I was going to use it as candied ginger.
I am looking for a Pandan plant but can not find one. I was told there are several different kinds, well that screw me up.

I have tried ginger but it does not grow. How much sun does it need. I gave tumerics but just learned what they were, used to call them hidden ginger because the beautiful flower is almost hidden down low.

Full disclosure. My turmeric patch was planted 8 weeks ago. It was one pound of roots planted edge to edge. One or two lone roots would not have produced so many leaves so fast.

I planted more roots last week but this time a half pound in two diff spots. Planted under three inches of wood chips again. As roots grow larger I will dig some up and spread them around.

My turmeric is pretty much out in the open. Nearby my house so it gets 3/4 of full sun. I water it twice a week but it has been raining a lot this summer. So it is definitely not shaded but it is well watered in my very sandy soil.

Zands, I'm going to a Patel's grocery in Tampa tomorrow. I buy turmeric to use in food (mostly in powder form). This time, was planning to get some roots/bulbs as well. Aren't the roots the edible part? Or does one consume the leaves as well?
And, if one consumes the bulbs, I guess they multiply when planted?

Roots will multiply. I want to get a big patch going. I am sure the leaves can be eaten / will not make you sick / but they might be kind of fibrous. http://www.turmeric.co.in/turmeric_varieties.htm     There are different varieties of turmeric. You might see more than one kind at Patels. You can look them up if you bring a smart phone. I just grabbed what I saw. Next time I buy some I will look it up on the internet.

Or you can print out the link I posted above and take it w you.

If you want to make a strong start I would buy two pound turmeric root and plant one pound in two places

Very good prices and selection of all tropical root crops can be found San Wa Market in Tampa. The place is huge with a very cold room for all vegetables, bring a coat/sweater.
Turmeric about $2/lb. the produce moves fast here and is generally fresh.

The leaves die back in the winter. We harvest it all (dig it up) .Let it dry. Replant in the spring.

This is my first year growing tumeric that I ordered from TT. Can I leave the tumeric in the ground over winter? Will the rhizome rot?

You don't need much to get a decent harvest. This was from 3 or 4 tiny pieces.

Thanks for the info on sun/shade ratio! Mine's in about 60% sun, I was debating if it needed water or less sun. I'll start giving it some extra water and see if it takes off.

Thanks, Zands, others. Bought some at Patels today (there were two varieties; yellow and white). Plan to add some to smoothies and plant the rest and see how that goes.

I have tried ginger too and turmeric is easier to have success growing at least for me. They are closely related with both having medicinal qualities / anti inflammation and more.  I use lots of ginger root in ginger tea. I run it through a green power low RPM juicer and freeze it. Then defrost it as needed for ginger overload tea. I juice it with a lime skin and all and its even better.

I just googled some info on the health benefits of Turmeric and it appears that Black Pepper which contains piperine is recommended to increase absorption into the human body. The extract I purchased has Black Pepper extract but I plan on planting and using fresh Turmeric so I will probably eat some Black Pepper in a meal with the fresh Turmeric or juice the Turmeric and swallows some whole black peppercorns.

I'm growing ginger and tumeric as well this year. Tumeric sprouts much faster and grows much nicer than ginger in Socal, like Zand's experience with them in FL. Tumeric leaves have no problem opening up whereas ginger leaves tend to stick together as old leaves don't unfurl completely and hold on to the tips of the new leaves. They're both much smaller than what they should be. Only 6 inches tall.

Zands, did you say your tumeric is a single clump that's a pound? We get finger-sized ones here and I had to look around for fresh looking ones that don't have the buds rubbed off from transport and handling. Pretty much all Chinese markets have it here.

Simon, I read about the increased absorption with black pepper and tumeric in the past. That's the reason I wanted to grow it. Tumeric from markets look so bad and they're pricey.

My dad grew tumeric for years but I think it hates the heavy clay soil there. It grew one shoot each year for the last 4 years. I don't think it grew much below ground.

ivre found they appreciate deep loose soil
mine are in a raised bed so i can harvest easy.
if its raised too high, it can dry out, and turmeric/ginger all like moisture.
i use cardboard or newpaper with woody mulch on top to stop the grass and weeds
and keep in moisture.

there is a white turmeric that is medicinal as well
i dont think its as strong, but i heard it has a mango flavor.

i tried growing black galingal but i think it rotted.

Turmeric is one of the more powerful herbs ive seen
i try to take some every couple of days
(aloe vera is another powerful i take a few times a week)
if you look at the NIH (Nat institute of Health) database, theres tons of info on Turmeric
(also aloe and lots of othe herbs)
but turmeric has had a ton of research already done.

My soil is almost straight sand here. The shovel goes right through both wet and dry soil. It's good for ginger and tumeric but I'm feeling a lot more organic material will do good in retaining nutrients in my case.
