Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone grow black goji berry?
« on: March 07, 2019, 11:15:30 AM »
I got some seeds from Baker creek this year (Yes, I know this is an old post) and already have a mature, heavily fruiting red. I didn't particularly enjoy the taste of the red but it's not bad. Kind of like a tart tomato to me?
Anyone else have experience with the black? Taste and growth wise?

A round trip drive to San Jose would cost me well over $120 with current diesel prices :)
Thanks for the recommendations though.

I'll be a little closer to sacramento this weekend and take a look around there.

Now I wonder if my wife actually likes manialla, or if they are autalfo in disguise. :P
We usually but 'manilla' but the case in asian supermarkets when theyre in season... I have multiple seeds growing here in norcal. They overwintered fairly well and should start pushing growth here soon..

I've had success with multiple varieties germinating in paper towels.

Reed avocados every 6ft

Haha, good point -- that would work well.  Though they'd be a perfect target for people to pick.
Pretty sure I'd be upset if someone took some a good avocado off my 'cado hedge. :)

I'd say passionfruit and bananas are a good choice.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guavas in NorCal (9B)
« on: March 01, 2019, 11:51:32 AM »
Good morning everyone!
I'm looking to add a Guava or two to my collection and had a few questions:
Do they do OK in pots (If I like the variety it would go in the ground within a couple of years)
I would prefer a sweet variety - and something good for juice (POG)

secondly, where would I source these in northern california? Does anyone have any good varieties for sale?

Thanks!

I've gotten seeds from him several times. Always great prices and good germination.

Potatoes come up in my compost every year.
and all over my garden. It's a good problem to have.

Any potatoes in there?
If so pull one up, you'll probably see a potato chunk in the roots.

If you want to go that large just have some soil delivered. Usually a three yard minimum (In my area). Cheaper than bags though.

188
Even if you don't have a truck you could always go to a big box store and get some bagged potting/raised bed mix (7-15$ a bag). I believe that would suffice in a pinch. It's going to be alot more costly than getting a truck load (about 35-40$ here) of good soil. Perlite and vermiculite can both be found at big box stores as well.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Best tasting fig?
« on: February 25, 2019, 11:38:31 AM »
Finally picked up a fig yesterday and I reread this topic.
I ended up getting a Violet de Bordeaux, and I recently acquired some cuttings from Achedomestica / Mike for Celeste.

I believe my wifes grandfather has some tiger stripe figs the wife and I enjoyed, I may grab a cutting from him this week and give that a try too.

We hit 34... alot of snow around us in higher elevation.
This looks to be our last bit of cold nights before we get back in to 40's and 50's at night in the valley. (This matches historical last frost dates for us too)
About to get busy in the garden/yard!!!!

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Please help ID pomelo variety
« on: February 20, 2019, 10:58:57 AM »
Hey Guys,
I'm thinking about multigrafting this tree later this year. It has three main branches and I'd be leaving a good portion of it as pomelo.
I wanted to know what kind of citrus grafts are compatible with a pomelo root stock?

I've recently tasted some mineola tangelos, and a blood orange and really enjoyed the taste. Would these be good matches for the pomelo? What about finger limes? My main issue with this tree is it just produces WAY too much for my wife and I, and we have a small lot (under 1/4 acre) and I'd love more variety. (and to practice grafting!)

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Lemon Zest mango tree
« on: February 13, 2019, 01:11:49 PM »
For all interested I've bought 4 grafted trees from brad past year and all 4 are growing much better than my Florida trees.they actually have dense growth and look like they're in their natural habitat. They easily made it though several rounds of Santa ana winds and more recently 5 days of morning frost.

Brad -thats a great looking tree and I'd buy it from you except I've already got a brad LZ creation! How is that ardith doing by the way?

Could you post some pictures? I am stuck with 20 different varieties of mangoes on turpentine rootstock before I read about it, most of mine were on 15/25 gallons and flowering currently. I am planning to grow ataulfo seedlings in deep nursery bags and graft as a replacements.

You may have some failures but many of your trees will likely do ok.  I would advise you to use mexican Kent rootstocks.  You can get cases of them in summer for cheap.  And they are much more vigorous than ataulfo seeds.  The ataulfo seeds tend to get long and lanky and not short and stout.  They like to flop over and seem to die back easier over winter.  At least grow both types and hedge your bets.

For what its worth, I am going to do some more trees with Simon this summer on the rootstock stockpile we have and then thats probably it.  Because getting seedlings through the winter here and then the success rate on grafts makes it not really worth the effort even at 100$ a tree.  Theres a reason no one is growing grafted mango trees in CA.  You need a greenhouse to really keep them happy and keep from flowering.  And lack of heat units and light units over winter even in San Diego is really hard on these plants.  So by the time I grow out 100 trees maybe I have 30 good ones that make it to be grafted and good takes in a state people want to purchase.  Any slow seeds, lanky seeds, sick seeds etc I toss.  Then the rest have to stay good for 6+ months of cold weather, then have to graft and have good takes.  Major PITA.
Hmm, I think we can get kent here. Maybe I'll try some of those for rootstalk to.. I have some nam dac mai, manilla, tommy atkins plants right now that took a bit of a beating but made it through some cold weather (They're inside now)

I have a large pomelo tree growing in my back yard but no clue what variety.
It most closely resembles 'thong dee' to me from pictures. I forgot to get a picture of the inside of a fruit but I'll post one later.
The fruit is light pink with very thick rind.

Please let me know what you think it is. Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sourcing tree pots
« on: February 11, 2019, 03:10:01 PM »
I get alot of free pots from a local nursery, but they don't ever have any tree pots.
I'll try calling around as I'm surrounded by orchards (stone fruits)
Glad to hear about good experiances with greenhouse megastore... I've nearly ordered from them twice now. :)

Thanks guys!

Where does everyone get their tree pots?
I have yet to try locally, but I'm looking for some tree pots for some cherimoyas and moringas.
I'll be calling my orchard supply today but I was looking around online and have not had much luck finding any without a hefty shipping fee.

Preferably the pots should be re-usable as I hate just using a pot once and it falling apart..

34 this morning, no frost and my diesel truck was very happy :)

Got walmart to do a return at no cost. Was a surprising pain in the butt. Ordered spreader sticker on amazon, will be here before I even receive my order from walmart. :)

It was purchased from a 3rd party through walmart. I tried to cancel the order immediately and was unable to as their customer service was literally nonexistant. Emailed the seller with no response.
Ideally if it would work that would be best. I think I paid 15$ for it, probably not worth the hassle of returning.

We hit 30 here around 6am. lots of ice on stuff this morning but not quite as bad as last night.
Another 32 degree night expected tonight. that makes 3 nights in a row but it looks like our 32 and below temps are very short. (2 hours or so) I've yet to see any damage to my passion fruit but I did bring my mangos in side.
