It’s been a busy few years so I haven’t been on in a while. We moved from Broward County to Stuart, FL. I went to Excalibur today to restart my collection and there are a few things I’m looking for. (1) Jujube - Thai Giant, (2) black sapote - Matt’s Giant, (3) Guanabana - Miami. I think I got all these from Mike Bender. :( I don’t know where to go now.

Just cut down our first jack from the Mai 3. It is 34 pounds. Haven't cut it open yet because I have a question about ripeness. About 20% of the jack has brown coloration with a couple soft spots. But the rest of the jack is green and hard. Is it possible that it is unevenly ripe, and if so, should I leave it on the counter for a couple days to help it?

We harvested a jackfruit today from our Cristela and it was delicious. Sweet, crisp (for a jack), relatively easy to peel.



This tree is very precocious and produces small jacks. It doesn't put as much energy into growing in height as it puts into producing fruits. It has remained a compact little tree, at about 6.5" after a few years in the ground. So for those who want jacks without devoting a lot of space, this may be your answer.

In the picture above, the jack is next to an 8" chef's knife. It has set 6 fruits this year, all at the very base. Last year it set two fruits when it was only 5' tall! I harvested those too early, and so wasn't able to taste the fruit until this year.

My 5' Day avocado produced 5 avocados last Fall. It burst into full bloom a couple weeks ago, but every single bloom fell off without setting fruit. What gives? Will there be another bloom cycle...? Was it the lack of water? The tree looks good, no pest problems, has been growing steadily. I can't imagine what is wrong.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Valencia Pride Topwork Update

Har worked on my Valencia Pride today. He unwrapped Sweet Tart budwood (thanks again Zands) and the couple San Fernandos that he grafted 6 weeks ago: 7 took, 10 didn't. Then he added 5 Pim Sen Mun grafts, with much thicker budwood, which I believe he has said is ideal for topworking. Here are some pictures of the VP. Older grafts are Prahm Kai Meia, Florigon, Bailey's Marvel, Southern Blush, Dupois Saigon, PPK. Labels have fallen off in many cases, so we're not sure what all has taken hold. The older grafts were done in August of 2012 and are the size of 7 gallon trees now.

(While here, he took some pictures of my Lisa atemoya, which he said is a spectacular example of the havoc that potato leaf hoppers and mealybug can inflict. So proud.)

What are all the varieties of spicy mangoes? I don't like Valencia Pride, but I like Beverly despite it's similarity because of the spicy overtones. I am eager to find more spicy mangoes. If you can think of any please list, and please specify if they are Southeast Asian (which I also love).

Here are a couple pictures of my swale in front of the house. I have purple mombin/hog plum and Geffner (I noticed a fruit on Geffner today!).





Next up, Mai-3 and Cristela jackfruit. Cristela is the smaller one. I'm having some issues with Cristela's nutrient intake, unlike the Mai-3 and Bangkok Lemon. Poor rootstock?

I just ran into a neighbor who said he found a solution to a problem he was having with birds stealing his miracle fruit crop. He got a pepper vine with red berries that look similar to miracle fruit and are super spicy (can't remember the cultivar). The mockingbirds went after it as soon as he put it out and haven't been back since.

I know there are all kinds of foliar feeds: seaweed, moringa, Miracid, Epsom salts, iron, etc.

My question is this: can I do it all at the same time in one feeding, or is there a drawback to mixing? Obviously I would need to check the combinations to make sure I'm not overdosing on any one element, but other than that, are any combinations in particular bad (or good?)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Needs recommendations for cocktail Day avocado tree

My Day avocado is 5-6' tall and is going to give me 3 fruits this year. I will probably be pleased with the fruit because I love avocados, but I am from Texas and thus partial to oily avocados. I need guacamole. So I am thinking of having Har help me top work part of the tree.

I know just enough about avocados to know that I don't know much about them. I know there are "A" and "B" blooming trees, but I don't have a good understanding of this, and specifically I'm not sure if this means I should match types when selecting budwood for a cocktail tree.

I know there are watery avocados (which I have) and oily avocados (which I want), but I don't know if these types can or should coexist on the same tree.

I know there are 2 different harvest times for avocados in South Florida, but I don't know how different bloom cycles coexisting on the same tree would affect productivity.

Taking all of the above into account, I'm interested in hearing recommendations!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Voting Time: Should Sri Kembangan Get The Ax?

I am posting pictures of my Kari and Sri Kembangan carambolas below. The Kari is small and is in front of the SK. The SK has the chlorosis leaves. The deep green leaves are from the Kari. They both get foliar feeds, iron drenches, Excalibur fertilizer, mulch and Epsom salts, even though the Kari has never show signs of needing any of this.

The only thing going in SK's favor at this point is its size. I haven't had the Kari very long, so maybe it just needs time for the cross-pollinating to work. They are flowering heavily right now- would this be a fair time to make final judgment, or is it too hot for fruit set? Thus far, SK has been a high maintenance, low yielding tree. So who votes for it to get replaced by a self-pollinating cultivar? (And if you vote for the ax, what cultivar do you think I should replace it with?)

I can't find the post now but I thought I saw something on-topic once about using sugar apple to achieve a higher pollination rate with atemoya. I have a Lisa and a Geffer right next to each other - but no fruit set so far. I have a small sugar apple in a pot in the backyard, and I am wondering if I plant it in the front next to the atemoyas will (a) I will get higher fruit set on the atemoyas (with or without hand pollination), and/or (b) seedier atemoya fruit?

A great new upscale pub in Hollywood offers 40+ beers on tap, including Cigar City Guanabana and many other fruit-infused beers. Sometimes it is difficult to meet each other at the fruit club events because of the number of people and speakers, so why don't we arrange a more casual, intimate setting?

Time & Place:
Thursday, May 9th, from 6-8 pm at the Tipsy Boar in downtown Hollywood, FL (1906 Harrison St.)

Anyone who plans to come, can you shoot me a PM, or preferably email at jay@kjaylaw.com, so I can get a head count for the manager? They have an outdoor patio and plenty of room. This could be a good time to arrange trades and maybe bring a plant for a raffle or contest or something. Ideas welcome, and anyone who wants to organize the trade/raffle is welcome!

Ok, ok, this is not a fruit. But I REALLY want it and don't know where to look. I can't find it in nurseries because of that whole cyanide-in-the-uncooked-leaves-thing. Does anyone in South Florida have it? It grows well from cuttings, apparently. I have lots of perennial vegetables for trade.

My barbados cherry tree has produced great berries the past year or so, but this month the berries are misshapen, pockmarked, with brown pods inside just under the pockmarks. What is this? Some sort of fruit fly?

Let's say, hypothetically, that your city is requiring you to plant a tree on your swale (that little area in between the street and the sidewalk) because you removed a tree (white fly invested coconut planted by previous owner). And that there is a very restricted list of trees that the city will allow to be planted on the swale. And none of them are fruit trees, with the exception of pond apple (annona glabra) and Indian Tamarind (Tamarindus indica). After the permit process, it is safe to assume that one of the city's arborists will drive by to verify that one of the approved trees was planted.

Does atemoya look substantially like pond apple? Atemoya leaves are bigger, right? Would a sugar apple be a better bet? I don't want pond apple. Although perhaps I could plant a big one and then top work it?

I know, I know- apples are not tropical and this post is therefore inappropriate, BUT I am visiting central MA this week and the number of apple orchards is overwhelming. I want to pick a good one with unusual varieties. Anyone have the inside scoop?
