Hello everyone,

I have a limited space to plant my cherimoya and atemoya trees in the ground. Will 5 ft from each other ( also 5 ft away from other trees on their left and right side).
It is a prime spot, sunny, quite protected from wind, super fertile rich soil (was a horse stable about 4 years ago).

Work with what you have. If you have five feet, use it!
But if you plant them six feet apart, they will be safer from the current contagion...  ;)

Preferably 12-14’. I have them 8’ apart and I have to prune 2-3 x a year and I still get aphids honeydew, slugs, spiders, caterpillars  all the pathogens....after 3-4 years you will run into these issues if you plant them that close.

Thanks, Carolyn. I am a little bit of an emotional buyer when it comes to fruit trees. Bought too many without considering how much space i have first.

I'm doing 10' spacing and know going in, it will be tough to keep airflow through the canopies. In the event you're planting even closer, I would recommend just approach grafting the two into a single tree, and having a multi-graft canopy. That should be pretty manageable versus 5' trunk to trunk. Even having a single tree in a space that tight will be a pruning effort, but for annona, it's worth trying.

I rather have many small trees than few big trees.
My atemoya are 4-5’ apart, around 4’ tall
5’ spacing is perfect for me.

Atemoya are easy to control size.
Mid March shorten the branches.
In July pinch the new tips to stop the tree from getting taller.
With 12-15 leaves left it’s enough to feed the fruits and grow thicker trunk.

Grafting is a wonderful solution  for people like me who wants to have as many varieties as possible with limited space.  What if you train anona to branch up and front (plenty of  sunny open space) instead of branching side to side?

This is exactly what a lady I met at Mimosa LA last week told me. I was telling her about my limited space, she said she lives in Rosemead and does not have much space either, so she grows everything 5 ft apart. She las longan, lychee, wax jambu, cherimoya, attemoya, etc. I don't know how 5 ft works with longan and lychee though. All her plants are in the ground for more than 10 years already, and she said they grow just fine. I should ask her to visit her orchard! Seanny, how many fruits can you get each year with the 5ft apart between trees?

I got 20 fruits last year.

You should be expecting 1/4 yield from a 10' tree.
With 4 small trees in the same space as a 10' tree, yield should be similar.
