Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guabiju pruning
« on: August 06, 2021, 05:27:59 PM »
A friend gave me a nice guabiju to plant out and I’m currently deciding on a location. A search told me it gets big but elsewhere I read it can be used as a hedge. Is it similar to jaboticaba in that it can be kept very small?

Thank you

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lakoocha Vs Kwai Muk
« on: February 02, 2021, 04:37:02 AM »
Lakoocha vs Kwai Muk. If you only planted one, which would it be.

I did find some older comments leaning one way or the other, has anyone had good examples of both?

All my trees are pruned and grown on 15ft/4.6m centres if that matters and climate is sub tropical with minor frosts.

Thanks all.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Atemoya breeding project
« on: July 30, 2019, 03:42:10 AM »
Article came up in my feed today that may interest folks. It’s about the breeding of custard apples here in Australia (atemoya are commonly called custard apples here). It has an Australian perspective/bias but some of the fruit look interesting.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Red Ball Lychee
« on: May 28, 2018, 08:47:03 PM »
Does anyone know anything about this variety? I have seen it mentioned on Australian lychee resources and trees sold here recently.

Is it renamed and if so what is it? Looking through info maybe Sum Yee Hong? Any information on chill requirements?

Apparently the fruit is quite large at 40g. Not huge but if that's an average it is certainly decent.

Thanks for any info!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dade white sapote
« on: May 12, 2018, 11:48:24 PM »
Hi All
Can anyone comment of the vigour of Dade? I have read conflicting information. I want to plant ot on 4.5m (15ft) spacing as I do mangos and jacks (pruning).

Thanks for any info :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Reed seedling avocado
« on: April 10, 2018, 08:53:47 PM »
Thought I would share a 32-35ish year old avocado at my folks house. Dad planted this one there from what he thinks was a reed fruit. Tree has never really been managed as you can see.

Flavor is great but seed is large. Fruit is about 500g on average. I only had one that was a bit past it to cut open but it shows the seed/flesh ratio.

I am going to graft it onto my multi-grafted tree here and preserve my dad's *Jim's Avo* haha. Nothing happening to my folks or the original tree anytime soon but will be nice to have at least a branch on my property :)

Sad news

Anestor Mezzomo has passed away as a result of a car accident. This was shared on a rare fruit group page  thismorning. I didn’t know him but sharing here for those that did.

RIP

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Madruno or intermedia
« on: January 06, 2018, 04:38:25 AM »
This one was sold to me as madruno but I think it might be intermedia, mainly because of the sellers reputation. Thoughts? How do I tell the difference? I had heard new growth and that is pictured.

I am happy either way and bought the tree knowing it could be either.

Thanks all
Dan

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Black sapote spacing and size control
« on: December 16, 2017, 01:41:46 AM »
What sort of spacing can I get away with on black sapote. Bernicker I am not worried about at all with the way it grows.. recently picked up a Tahiti which looks more vigorous in the pot and wanted some info before it goes in the ground. The only distances I can find are for unpruned trees.

Note: I prune for size control where possible. Mangoes are spaced at 15ft.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rootstock for atemoya
« on: December 12, 2017, 07:57:13 PM »
In my area it seems that most atemoya are sold on cherimoya rootstock. Is there a reason atemoya seeds can’t be used as rootstock? I don’t have access to cherimoya seeds but have plenty of atemoya.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone able to ID this?
« on: October 14, 2017, 08:35:54 AM »
I was on another forum for an unrelated hobby and somebody was asking about this tree. I had no idea but got permission to ask here. Anyone know what this is?

Thank you

Dan

Citrus General Discussion / Spacing on flying dragon
« on: September 20, 2017, 04:59:06 PM »
Hi All

Can I get away with 2m/6.5ft spacing on flying dragon rootstock? I don't grow a lot of citrus but going to make an informal row/ semi hedge along one side of the house where it will get taken care of. Looking for trees to touch but not over crowd each other / having to prune to the point of no fruiting.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango flowering times?
« on: September 18, 2017, 06:50:14 PM »
Hi All

I swear I have seen it somewhere here (or maybe somewhere else) but I can't find it. Is there a list of mango flowering times relative to each other?

I only aim to have five mangos or so and looking at what can fill the gaps. I have Alison Red (early), Palmer (late) and Keow savoy (not sure, only new and it won't really compete with the others anyway as it's mostly for green eating).

Anyone know where such a list might be?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Green sapote vs Mamey sapote
« on: September 10, 2017, 02:33:40 AM »
Ok I have a Mamey sapote planted in the ground (one year) and two green sapote in pots that I grew from seed. I like Mamey enough to have one tree but not any more than that. I have never tasted green sapote. Is green sapote sufficiently different to be worth growing as well (or maybe even instead of)?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Garcinia size control
« on: July 10, 2017, 07:09:16 AM »
Hi All

I grow achacha and a yellow mangosteen (not sure if it's dulcis or tinctoria) here. All are small but are growing.

In terms of garcinia are there any particular do and do nots with regards to size control? How small can they reasonably be kept? I was surprised when I saw how large they can actually get if left (for what I imagine is a loooong time). I haven't seen much on pruning but have seen some very large spacing recommended.

Thanks for any advice!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cempedak cold tolerance
« on: June 26, 2017, 09:25:45 PM »
Hi all

Been reading for a few years but only just joined. Figured I would ask a question I have wondered about for some time. Does anybody know if you can grow cempedak in the subtropics? I am in Brisbane Australia and my property is frost free though does get down to 3-5 degrees Celsius during early mid winter mornings (rarely).

It's a tree I have always wanted to grow but wasn't sure if I could.

Thank you

Dan
