I have a grafted mango tree in Trinidad that's more than 5 years old and about 7 feet tall that has not given me any fruit yet and needless to say I'm losing patience (sharpening my axe!!) so I was searching on the Forum for any chemical means I could try and came across this thread.

Has anyone here successfully used chemicals like Calcium Nitrate to induce flowering in mango?

Thanks much for all the input guys!

Going to try it.....

I have some sheetrock material left over from some construction at my home. My soil needs Calcium and the main ingredient in drywall is gypsum - is it safe to add as is to the soil or are there toxic additives that are a no-no?

Thanks!

Sam

Hey Mike,

Great info on all the Garcinias. How big does the Macrophylla tree get and at what age do they begin fruiting?

Are they dioecious as well?

Sam

Thanks for sharing that cool video!

Could this be grafted onto mangifera indica?

My seedling mammea americana has finally flowered after 8 years. I am trying to figure out if this is a male for female flower or otherwise.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Is there a difference in taste between pachira and glabra?

How many years to fruit?

Thanks!

Will Sapucaia thrive in waterlogged soils?

When I say waterlogged I mean soggy during the rainy seaso (with some surface water visible) but dries out in the dry season.....

Looks like Mammea Americana to me. It's a member of the Guttiferea family I believe so a relative of mangosteen.

The only time I've been able to actually taste a fell ripened Canistel is when they fall from the tree, and of course this helps no one : (

I have harvested Canistel when they turn yellow but no matter how many times I've tried, they've never ripened properly. Are there any special precautions to take?

No, the skin is tough and the pulp is much firmer (not hard) than sugar-apple when ripe.

Was your fruit split wide open, or just little cracks by the stem?

The fruit was split wide open and they actually fell to the ground.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Grafting Breadfruit

Good day all,

I have some breadnut plants growing (about 2' tall) but would really like to graft some breadfruit onto them.

I did a search and this thread came up.

Peter, how are those grafted breadfruit trees working out for you?

Any additional learnings or tips anyone can share on grafting breadfruit?

Thanks much!

Sam

My Ilama bore fruit for the first time this year (2) and I waited for them to crack on the tree before I harvested. They cracked and fell but the fruit was quite hard. I kept it waiting for them to get soft, they never did and eventually began to rot.

Was I supposed to harvest them in a different way?
Does the flesh get as soft as a sugar apple?

Thanks much.....I can't believe I missed this one.....

Must be the copious quantities of sugar apples    ; )

Hello everyone,

I read somewhere that consumption of Soursop (Annona Muricata) in large quantities could lead to a disease similar to Parkinson's.
First, is this actually true and second, does this extend to other members of the Annona family?

Reason I'm asking is I love sugar apple (Annona Squamosa) and I eat lots.....

Sam

It is actually quite difficult to import plant material into Trinidad. The Ministry of Agriculture (Trinidad) has stated that they will be re-looking into the importation of plant material to make it easier but this has not happened to date.

Nor do I expect it to happen in the short term.....
