Hey there all you mango fanatics. Anybody have experience growing the Dot mango in an inland (humid / no breeze) area without fungicide application. My wife is begging for me to plant one, but I don't use fungicide -- so trying to figure out if I'm going to get enough fruit to make it a worthwhile planting.

Funnily, Pine Island once rated the Dot as a 4-star flavored mango.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Maranon Azucaron!
« on: June 28, 2012, 07:28:04 PM »
A couple of years back, I imported several cultivars of cashew from Central America. One that was particularly interesting was sourced from Brazil and was called the 'Azucaron' (full of sugar). The 'Azucaron' has a giant seed and a sweet pseudo-fruit (11 degrees of brix) with low levels of astringent tanins.

After battling the past couple of cold winters and losing most of my trees, I finally got one to bear. Here's the first fruit ! Check out the size of the seed.

They eventually bulldozed the mother tree in El Salvador to make way for development, so this is the only tree left!

Sorry guys but I don't have any budwood or seeds for sale. The tree is too small.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My Charlie Brown Excalibur Mango Tree
« on: May 20, 2012, 09:06:14 PM »
Of about a dozen mango trees in my collection, this one is the most difficult. It has performed very poorly for me in the past 5 years that I've grown it, producing a total of five mediocre flavored fruits in as many years.

I was going to top-work it, but I have a theory that my poor experience with the tree has been due my high-ph soil. So, I'm determined to get this boy to work for me, and I've put it on a high-maintenance macro/micro nutrient program. I'll check in with my progress later on in the year.

For now, who can pick out all of the deficiencies?

How do I make my lazy atemoyas pump out more flowers? I have a giant Petch pakchong with a trunk as thick as my forearm that gives me about 12 flowers and 0 fruit per year. I also have a gefner that's in the 3 to 4 year old range that is also a couch potato. I have super poopy alkaline 'soil', and I have neglected to give them anything other than mulch and compost.

Here's what the petch pak chong looks like. I think the burnt foliage is due to the fact that it leafed out too early and then got hit colder temps.

Has anybody had success growing this mango in Florida or SoCal? It's an Indian cultivar reported to be of exceptional quality and having a dwarf stature.

What's the scoop on the Cheena Jackfruit? Is it any good? Literature says fibrous; does that mean that it's one of those soft and hard to swallow jacks?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Yah for the Rosigold!
« on: March 11, 2012, 08:48:19 PM »
Here's another tree I really like -- the Rosigold. Year after year, this tree sets 2 crops, one maturing in April and the other maturing in the summer. It's highly productive, precocious, and has a dwarf habit. These were taken today, March 11.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / The Julie Mango in South Florida
« on: March 11, 2012, 08:38:26 PM »
The julie mango is an interesting mango in that it can either be a

Phenomenal mango with high precocity, high productivity, and multiple blooms leading to a long season

  -- OR --

A finicky, unfruitful, disease-prone tree that is difficult to maintain and keep healthy

In talking with Gary Zill about my observations on the Julie, he indicated that the success or failure of growing the Julie depends largely on the soil in which it's grown. When grown in alkaline soil or when irrigated with calcium rich well water, the Julie can be a pain in the neck to grow. But when grown in neutral soil, the Julie is very productive and relatively care-free.

For the Julie-doubters (:-) who haven't seen a productive Julie in Florida, take a look at the below specimen (which is representative of dozens of similarly productive trees located in Tamarac). It has hundreds of thumbnail sized fruits in addition to flowers and dozens of 2-inch sized fruits.

Next up, here's an example of the other extreme of the Julie (in my neighborhood :-( ...) where high-ph soil makes it a pain in the neck to grow ph-sensitive plants like the carambola. The Julie tree has, at best, a dozen or so fruits. In contrast to the above Julie, most of the flowers fell off without setting fruit. A closeup reveals extreme interveinal chlorosis.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Young / Tebow Mango
« on: March 05, 2012, 03:07:03 PM »
This is an interesting mango tree. I have one growing in a pot, and it's been on par with the Pickering in terms of precocity. Mine bore a fruit in a 3gal pot. This year, it looks like it's going to bear again. Any experiences with this mango?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dear Sapodilla Wizards
« on: March 02, 2012, 06:45:47 PM »
I purchased this 'Alano' sapodilla many years ago, only to find that what I had purchased was not an 'Alano'. For the past couple of years, I've been trying to figure out what cultivar this tree really is. Below are pictures of the fruit and the leaves. I think it's either a Moreno or a Molix. Can any of you smarty pants identify it?

Thanks for the help!

OK Fruit Cowboys - For those of you who rely on mail order to get high quality fruit trees, PlantOGram is your source. I just purchased a tree yesterday -- and the darn thing came at 9:30am this morning. (That's less than 24 hours for the math-challenged!) The tree is over 5 feet tall and super healthy in a 3gal! I even got my free surinam cherry :-).

For local sourcing (here in Broward), I'll hook you guys up. But for mail order, Mickey is the man!
