Lychees branch very well on their own.  I dont really recommend tip pruning the..  i have even seen tip pruning causing the tips to die back and be counterproductive.

Rob, are you referring to tip pruning vegetative growth or blooms? I've seen people say that young lychees should not try to bear fruit so that they can focus on getting larger. I've taken this to mean to tip prune any blooms. I've got early mixed growth currently and am letting it grow until i can safely prune the flowering panicles  without affecting the new leaves

Andrew don't prune off blooms until it gets alot warmer or else you will just get blooms again evenext can wait until fruit gets about pea size and prune.   Samu i usually give my lychee a diluted drink of fish/seaweed.  It usually gives it a boost and I don't know if it's just me but my tree seems to radiate with happiness the next morning. :)

thanks for the tip. I'll wait a little and prune later. did you fertilize during the blooms/vegetative growth or after they mature?

before bloom matures I give it P K minimal N and lots of micro nutrients of course I started the regime early winter things like bonemeal sulpomag and fish/seaweed( very diluted) once flowers mature I give it a more balance regime

Boxturtle, I had already recently given it an extra light drink of 0-10-10 Alaska's "morbloom" liquid fertilizer per someone's suggestion I read somewhere in this forum..., so I'll add more in a few days...

Oops Rob, hope my few tip prunings of the tiny blooms won't affect the young tree, considering it's only on it's second flowering season...thanks for the tips guys!

It looks like one of the flowers is growing again now  (March 5th).

Apart from deciding if I need to prune the flowers/fruits, I'm also wondering how best to deal with what appears to be a dead branch of rootstock above the graft. It is cracked and dead right down to the graft. Should I cut it off? How close to the graft? Presumably I also need to seal it.

Thanks, I hope so too! It's 3 1/2 years old. This is the first time that it's flowered. Same with my Brewster. My Mauritius beared fruit for the first time last year. All three were planted at the same time.

My Mauritius is blooming...its actually setting a few fruits now. Doesn't look like a bumper crop this year though  :(...seem less than the last several years.

Nothing happening with mine...after 3 strong producing years in a row, maybe they are taking a break.

Still waiting to see what comes out when they finally wake up. But it's getting late right?

Ah well if no fruiting this year I don't mind, the trees look a little beat up from the dry season, so I won't mind getting an early start on feeding and watering them well to really flush them out before the fall.

Neither my Sweetheart or Mauritius are unlikely to bloom this year :-(

Last year the Sweetheart bloomed very well, set a few fruit, not one grew to eat, they all fell off.

Sorry to hear that Gary  :(...I'm sure its because I have many more chilling hours than you guys down south. Better growing conditions up here for Lychees and not so good for mango when the freeze hits.

yup looking at it with some hope...my trees are just looking like they may push soon...a couple early buds.turned out to be vegetative growth...but 95% havent pushed yet...

looks like it could be a poor/resting year for me...unless this front brings some late magic...

I have a 42°, 43° and a 48° lows later in the week...really looking forward to this last "cooler" weather considering I'll have to wait about 10 months for the next cold front  ::)

Kaimana is a great lychee. Unfortunately it rarely blooms in Florida.

Several of my lychee are blooming as well. I was told that it is ok to fertilize them now but not sure if this is right . What is the thought about the right time to fertilize young 4 foot lychee trees ? Should I wait until after fruit set ?

Moving along slowly but it's a first for me. One fairly large bloom and 2 other tiny ones. Looks like boys and girls are hanging out together but not sure if I can anticipate fruit yet.
