Has anyone fruited Lemon Zest Mango in Hawaii?
« on: July 11, 2017, 12:39:29 AM »
I grafted some LZ mangos a few years back and have one in the ground. It has not flowered yet and I'm trying to decide if I should keep the other ones in pots or put them in the ground.

Has anyone fruited this in Hawaii, if so what part of the islands?

i don't know anyone that has it on the big island or oahu, most of my fruit growing friends havent even heard of it, as they don't post on here or aren't paying attention to whats happening in FL

Thanks for your reply. I have a LZ plant in the ground for almost 2 years. Will update on my progress. Its looking very healthy so far, but no signs of flowers. I live in fairly wet, lowland area (north shore, oahu)

just a little update for everyone on this topic. Lemon Zest is flowering here on the north shore of oahu for the first time. the tree is only 3 years old so probably wont hold fruit, but it seems to do really well in this climate in terms of the large flower set.

unfortunately I dont have any trees left, but you can come grab some scions whenever they are ready (or i can mail some to you). I will graft some more this next season also.

Update to this post since I've had a few people asking. Lemon zest flowered and had a decent initial fruit set even with some powdery mildew issues. But about 3-4 weeks after initial fruit set almost all of the mangos dropped. Tree is healthy otherwise and can provide scions to Hawaii people if you want this variety.

That’s awesome that LZ appears to at least grow and flower ok in Hawaii. It is such an awesome tasting variety. LZ seems to take a while to settle in before it will hold fruit and the first fruits can be very watered down, especially if you get lots of rain.

If you give it frequently small doses of fertilizer including Calcium, LZ is one of the best mangos there is. LZ is awesome when the Brix is approximately 23-25% Brix or higher. At 19-22% Brix, they are good. This is for SoCal grown fruit.

You guys are lucky living in Paradise! ..

A few month back I was offered a job out there , I imagined my Family living in a mountain home , but I looked up real estate prices out there 😳 $50 per HRs would get me a 1 bed room apartment yikes .
