Title: Birth of a new Chewy Purple Sugar Apple- A. squamosa 'Isan Indigo'
Post by: palmtreeluke on August 29, 2017, 12:47:30 PM
A few years ago I visited my future wife's family in the rural parts of Thailand's North east region called 'Isan'. (pronounced E-san) It was here I was gifted a very special fruit. I was handed a purple sugar apple that made the rest of the family jealous.  I ate and enjoyed the fruit and slipped some seeds into my back pocket. Long story short, a few trees ended up growing and got the first fruits in 2.5 years in Ft Myers, FL. There was one tree from all the seedlings that made about 6 fruits that 1st fruiting year with no pollination. This year (3.5yrs old from seed) the tree set 50 fruits with only hand pollination on 2 occasions 2 weeks apart.

The tree was selected and exhibits high productivity, excellent chewy dark purple/red skin, inside has white meaty flesh with a raspberry juice flavor, relative low seed count, it is an 'easy peel' sugar apple.

Background on sugar apple types:
In Thai they characterize the type of sugar apples into two categories: 'nang' or 'fai'. The 'nang' type is an easy peel chewy type when ripe. The 'fai' type is a type that is more of a sugary mush and much less desirable grainy texture. The 'Isan Indigo' is a 'nang' type along with the green 'Na Dai' Vietnamese types.  As far as I know all known RED SUGAR Apples types in cultivation are the 'fai' mushy type.

I will use this thread to share results of testing and other pertinent information for this new variety. Grafted trees will be available in the future. A limited amount of seed is available through our website due to demand. https://greenplanetfarm.com/products/thai-purple-chewy-sugar-apple-seeds-a-squamosa-isan-indigo

I can confirm that this is a very chewy dark red/purple sugar apple and as far as sugar apples go it is excellent.

Here's a pic of the one Luke shared with me. The fruit to seed ratio was really good even though it was an average sized sugar apple.

Its most likely due to mail pressure on the envelope. The envelopes were sent with non padded. What happens is the hard seeds get pressed up like pushing a pea out of a pod. They then eject out with the mail sorting process. Hopefully Luke will be able to resolve those issues, I would give him some time due to the Hurricane impacts.

For people who requested replacement seeds, your order is on its way.

We took a hard hit from hurricane Irma.
Good news the Purple sugar apple ' Isan Indigo' has taking flooding and high wind the last two weeks. we got near 20" or rain 2 weeks ago from low pressure system 92L.  Then just a few days ago hurricane Irma with over 12" of rain and cat 3 winds.

The sugar apple didn't move or brake and branches. this is a tough plant and highly recommended for south Florida growers.

The one with the most shell removed is the first one to germinate.
The other 5 are still dormant.

What was your germination rate for the "Isan Indigo" seeds? I had a very low rate. I am pretty new to growing so I am assuming i did something wrong  :'( If I recall right I ordered the seeds Novemberish.  Do you think they are still viable or far gone?

So far I have 2 out of seven, in this time with the low temperature takes longer, and yes your seeds are still good sometimes they can take up to 5 months don't give up!

for those who have germinated baby sugar apple seedling, please use sterile medium( potting mix) when germinating. and use fungicide sprays  on young seedlings to keep damping off fungus from killing them. I lost a batch of 400 seedlings this way. and a few customers have the same results.

I use copper fungicide. If you can get them past the baby  6 inch tree stage you should be in the clear.

happy growing.

Not at all connected to Isan Indigo seeds but just yesterday I was cleaning out my greenhouse and found six standard sugar apple seeds which had germinated after one year in multi-cell seedling trays. The trays were filled with weeds but also had 4" seedlings mixed in.
So, some of these can be quite recalcitrant. If you have no success perhaps search or screen out the seeds and inspect the seeds to confirm if they may still be viable.

I ended up getting 2 to germinate. I have 11 sugar apples including 2 Big reds 2 Isan Indigo and some
other seedlings from last year. All of mine are 4'-6' and in 7 gallon pots. I figured out something for me in Florida.
I had 3 "special" Na Dai from a forum member. They were the last to germinate this past winter. One was exceptionally
small and I put it on my lanai that gets filtered morning sun only. It is now bigger then all the rest that were in more
direct afternoon sun?  Seanny your tree is plenty green and not dying was it in direct sun? I also notice the flowers set and
the trees grow best when we get humid in the rainy season. The spring the trees don't grow much and the flowers don't set

I really enjoyed this sugar apple. It pealed easy and was chewy.
I have two more small fruit on separate trees but I can't wait to get these
two trees larger and in full production. It had 31 seeds so at least this one
was not low seed count.

Gifted a fruit that made your future wife’s family envious, and you didn’t share any with them?
Did you eat it in front of everyone and leave them without a seed?

Any updates?  How are everyone’s Isan Indigos doing?  How are the trees growing in Southern California?  How do they handle our winters?  Please tell. Please tell.

Nick C, that is great growth for one year.  My one year old Isan Indigo seedlings are about 4-8" tall.  I also have a recently grafted one that is starting to grow.

Seanny, sorry to hear you killed yours.

Does anyone know, does sugar apple grow better as seedlings or grafted to cherimoya rootstock in Southern California?  I have been told both grow better here.  Any input?

Are sugar apples unusually sensitive to overwatering?  My 1gal seedlings are looking pretty sad after winter and I was worried I let them stay too wet

In my personal experience I believe they are. My grafted Thai lessard gets spotty, brown, and doesn't grow as vigorously when it has prolonged wet periods. I've barely watered it this winter compared to all my other trees.

When sugar-apples are leafless, or nearly leafless, don't water them.

Also make sure it has some gypsum or lime.

My Isan Indigo have grown insanely fast.  Most are now over two feet tall, one is almost five feet tall.  The big one will go into the ground in the spring.
