I have rooted hundred's of cuttings using Pepsi Cola bottles, from a single bottle to a triple decker. Pepsi Cola bottles work better for this You can do this by cutting at the top edge, were it starts to turn, for single's, or for doubles and triples at the  bottom edge of the bottle, . Single bottles need a 3x3 inch door, doubles and triples don't need a door but do need a (V) type window for air filtration just over  the soil line, you must also make a 1/4 inch hole in the cap, for air filtration, or fungus and mold will start to grow, you also need drain holes at the bottom. In the Pics. you can see Hibiscus cuttings fully rooted, and an Annona Reticulata scion, that was place in a bottle with an umbrella bag over it, to keep it from drying, its been there since 4/14 and it is still green from absorbing moisture from the soil

That's a creative method. It's nice because it up cycles and doesn't take up much space. I'm going to do that with Passiflora cuttings.

Hi, Passiflora and many other plants will do great in the bottles, just to give you an idea of what's possible with the crates, and bottles. I have had 5 crates stack on top of each other, occupying a small floor area of  20''wide by 10'' deep, each one is 14'' high, for a total of 70 inches tall, that's 8 bottles in each crate x 5 for a total of 40 bottles x 5 cuttings in each equals  200 cuttings, that I can root in 2 square feet area.

2l bottles fit well over mega tubes as well. I've been starting alot of seeds in the 16cm deep megatubes with bottles on top and it keeps the humidity nice and high.

Awesome to see how they fit on the tubes, those bottles are a green house for sure, thanks for the pics. that is what makes TFF interesting, seeing how other people use ideas to grow.
Thank you

Lol. It seems we all owe Pepsi a thank you. I kept my Mangosteen seedling alive during the Winter by creating a little bottle greenhouse for it. See picture. :)

Thank them yes, but they need to thank us too. In a way we are doing ourselves a favor by recycling plastic, and keeping the plastic away from the landfill.

Hi, Soren the concept works very well my friend, you are talking about slugs! my worst enemy here in Florida, and in my yard, I just can't stop them. I don't pardon a single one.

Carlo O. Have you tried rooting Jaboticabas with this method?
When you do, do you use rooting powder and moist soil? also, do you get hard wood or soft wood to start them?
Thanks! Xenia

with passionfruits it's quite easy, but the main problem is algae forming inside the bottle.
Because it's transparent, algae tends to spread. That is not really a problem I think because my passionfruits are really doing well.
I'm growing Passionfruits mostly in a field, the bottle is just for 1st year cuttings so that the roots gets bigger, but they always fruit very easily. ;)

Tropicalnut I have never grown Jaboticabas, so I can't comment on them.
Majime I think the Pepsi bottles have more room in them, and I can also do double and triple decker with them. I can't do that with the Coca Cola, also I have endless supply of the Pepsi B. my wife and Grand kids drink that stuff, as for me  Beer or water only.

Hello there!
Do you guys think that I can start my cutting of purple mombin with this method? I manged to get my hand on some 4-5 " cuttings and I am thinking to use so rutting power and try this method.
My other question are: Do I keep them indoors until I see signs of growth? or do I put them outside in the shade, Phoenix is pretty hot and humid right now, more hot than humid.
Thanks for any help! I would hate to lose this little guy doe to my ignorance.  :'( Xenia

Hi Xenia,  most spondias cuttings  are very easy to grow,  they dont even need rooting powder, just make sure the potting medium has good drainage,  maybe you wanna do 50/50 with sand,  yes shade or filtered sunlight would be better, here is fine outside but we never go higuer than 85/90 more than that could be risky, also if your take them inside and the temperature is lower than 23 celsius they are gonna have hard time to grow cause is a tropical plant,  just check temperatures and you wanna do a mix or combo in and out as day go by...

Hi Carcarlo,  when you start the rooting process Do you keep the botle close?  If this the case dont you have problem with white fungus appearing over the cutting?
I just have the problem with some breadfruit cuttings I put last week,  maybe this is cause the humedity is too high inside?  Or cause my cuttings are allready death?

Hola,Raul  no I have not had white fungus problems, I always have air filtration through the bottles, with a hole in the cap and one just over the soil line, sometimes they get a little green inside, but that's all. All cuttings are different and some will root and some just won't.

How does the water drain? Is there a hole (or more than 1 hole) drilled into the bottom of the bottle?
Thanks,
Trung

Hi,

I studied your photos but can't see the cutting at the top edge as said
Can't see the 3x3" door
Can't see the 'V' windows just over the soil line for air
Can't see 1/4" hole in the cap. In fact I can't see even a cap
????????? I'm confused. Could you please help?

I have been trying to root Passionfruit cutting many times but all failed. I hope this method will give me the edge.

How do you get the soil into the bottles? How do you get the cuttings into the bottle? My pepsi bottles and cuttings are calling me and I don't know what to do.

Thanks,

"Which species did you root?"

Look like a bunch of guava cuttings, both big canes and small sticks. Great!!! did you place them in partial shade or 100% shade? The photos show they were out in the open yard???

the photos show there are water in the bottom of the Pepsi clear bottles. No drain holes and no root rot?
