The only one of those that I have tried to grow is Haden... and I would recommend against it for tree vigor.  Could have been my bad luck, but it has suffered with every frost we've had.

My Manila tree (you should be able to find this one at the big box stores - HD and Lowes) is doing very well.  It produces a good quality fruit and likes SoCal.  Relatively trouble free.

I have had a lot of Kent fruit and it is very good... I can't speak to how well the tree will do in our zone or your sub-climate.

A perfectly ripe Carrie is a beautiful thing.  That being said, I have never tried a Harden or Timotayo.

socal10b, Green Mart in Orange has Malika and Valencia Pride. Based on JF's recent mango tasting, I grabbed a Malika when I was at the nursery last Saturday.

Carrie, Glenn, Keitt, and Kent I have tried and are really good.  out of those you listed,  Glenn for Early season,  Carrie for early/mid, Kent for mid/late and  Keitt for real late.

Of course if you can get one of those other great varieties like, Valencia pride, Lemon Zest, Maha Chanok etc. go for it.  too bad your having a hard time finding scions.  the crfg folks should be able to help you out,  also If I was in CA, I would definitely want to try a few of those new varieties being breed out there, from the Mango Professor .

A lot of great options to choose from the guy. It comes down to either a malika or Glenn to buy.
How much did you get that Malina?

How does the crfg exchange work, if I join do I need to bring scions? Or Ican buy scions at the eexchange? Can someone please briefly explain the process? Thanks.

The Malika from Green Mart is about 3 ft tall and I think I paid $60 for it.

I'd recommend Carrie, Glen, Keitt, Kent. These are the ones that I know and they are fantastic mango cultivars.

Yes, most of the grafted mangoes in 5gal (3-4') I have seen in this area are about $50.

The Manila seedling at Lowes/HD is < $25.

I forgot to add a Malika you will be hard pressed to find a better tasting mango in Socal plus it's a mid season from Sept to Oct.

Hey SoCal - I bought a Timotayo at Green Arrow Nursery in Granada Hills )?) - the one on
Sepulveda.  They also have 2-3 other varieties - i think a Gold Nugget was there too.  And they were under
$50.  And I just want to add the Keitt has a very long season - it holds mangoes for 3 months at least, from my experience...

Malika is an outstanding mango but if you want a consistent producer, Glenn...,btw, Glenn is an excellent tasting mango but as Harry says try the fruit first

El Monte is great mango growing zone, you can grow whatever you want

Thx JF if Glenn is a better producer I rather go with that. Will malika do well in a 15g pot?

Glenn is a more vigorous grower. If size of tree is the main criterion, then Mallika is better.

I think we can all agree that when it comes to 'Glenn,' we're all 'Glenn' freaks.  :D

Harry, now that you mention it, 'Glenn' is vigorous, and that to me is a good thing. I've always been under the impression that it will not grow into a large tree, which I don't mind. If a mango is of excellent quality, I don't mind if it gets big, since I do have some space for it.

With all due respect *Maestro* Harry,

your young grafted mango trees in South Florida grow more than twice the rate in one year as ours. It's true, Glenn is vigourous here in Socal but nothing compare to yours.

socal10b

Malika grow well in containers and i suspect faster in the ground. The only mango trees that are vigorous in Socal are seedlings....grafted trees grow much slower especially when you let them fruit young.

Here are pics of my Malika in a box it has been growing in this container for almost 4 years. Another pic of a Cuban seedling grown from a seed a year ago( August 2012). This seedling will flower next year and fruit the year after.

Malika 4 years( Jan.2010) in box

Size is not a problem, but i want a productive tree, so if a tree is vigorous that means it will grow big and the tree will have more producing woods right.

Thanks JF for the great pics.

Probably i will plant a glenn in the ground and get another malika and grow it in a large container, or graft onto the glenn later.

Guys, is It better to prune the main trunk right away or wait for it to grow then heck it down. I saw a lot of people on this board has low branches mango trees, I would love to have low tree with a lot of lateral growth, prune or wait? Thx guys.

.....I think 99 percent will say prune early.  That way you get the nice branching that is your scaffold
for your future "bushy" tree....it's called "tipping" where you keep snipping the new growth to get it
to branch...

Socal10B, don't prune just tip. Start right away on any new growth.
