Blackberry Jam Fruit Tree - Randia Formosa
« on: June 16, 2020, 08:34:05 PM »
I am interested in what others in this forum feel about the Blackberry Jam Fruit Trees .....
Research shows it can handle below freezing temps for the rare times it dips below 33F up against the house on the south side, it could survive without me panicking, watering, covering etc.

It seems like a worthy addition to a fruit salad and would love input on your opinion of flavor, texture etc.

Should I grow this from seed or would a grafted tree be better?

If seed, I would love to buy some, so if you have some for sale, please contact me.

TIA, and Happy Gardening !!

Here in SF Bay Area zone 10b.
it’s a struggle even in a greenhouse from seed. It’s moderately cool year round here rarely above 80 and only dips below 35 a few random nights in the winter. It’s always 10-20 degrees warmer in the greenhouse and yet loses all it’s leaves and barely recovers by the end of summer before going dormant again. Any suggestions for species or care would be super helpful. I’ve tried a few of the Randias and I feel like none of them are happy here.

I have one growing in canada zone 9a. Its 2 years old now, its like the plant gets nutrient lockout in the cold months the leaves still grow but are very light green. Now that its finally warming up again(really cooly wet june) the leaves are darkening up nicely and growth is picking up.

I'd be interested in one, once it has some sets of true leaves established.
Continuing my journey to disprove those who say "You can't grow that in the desert" since 2013.
