There must be something magical in those Austrailian black sapotes,  the ones I tried were ok, and I only prefer them in a milkshake with some milk and sugar added.  but I have noticed in Aussie forums that folks down there just go bonkers for them. and now i see you listed it above Mango here.   this may be considered blasphemy by some folks  ;D

So my guess is that you guys have some tastier sweeter Black Sapote cultivars.

1) Mango
2) Pommerac (Malay Apple)
3) Banana
4) Sapodilla
5) Governer Plum (Hog Plum)

Honourable mention: Portugal (Trinidad Clementine)

Do you know any where to get pommerac in S FL?

Hi murahilin

I had no luck sourcing pommerac fruit in S FL. Almost bought the tree, but if you've seen those trees untamed....they are towering.

No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

I enjoy them immensely, as does my son. He's 16 months and goes nuts whenever he sees one!
I'm sure some selections here are a big step up from what's over there, especially hearing you have little to no named and grafted varieties readily available. The other big factor is that the BS fruits in the dead middle of winter, when good fruit are scarce (other than a glut of citrus). So many fruits compete against each other in late summer and there are huge volumes of them all, so they have much tougher competition being a seasonal favourite. In mid/late summer I've been known to throw mangoes and passionfruit at the cockatoos trying to steal lychees or 'play' with my baby rollinia. The fruit I forgot from that list would be Atemoya, which I would actually put at #3. Lychee then goes to #6 and Jakfruit comes in at #7  ;D

Or maybe the australians are very mango poor?: KP1, KP2, KP3, and Bowens. HAHAHA
Seriously though, they do have better selection of the black sapotes than we do for sure!

I planted a tree at my mom's house about 6 years ago and its around 10 ft tall now but it hasn't flowered or fruited yet. They can get pretty tall but I think it should be manageable with proper pruning. I doubt any of the large trees that I've seen in Trinidad were ever pruned.

An airlayered or grafted pommerac may be slower growing. I am not sure though.

@BMc  you are correct , the ones i have tried were "no name" seedlings.  I have a potted tree that has not fruited yet, but I think eventually I will top work it, and graft some named varieties, I noticed on another thread that there are some named varieties available in Florida, so maybe on one of my trips there, I will get some scions.

BMc is correct about black sapotes and many people love them and abius as well. With the big chill this winter the mangoes and lychees are spazzing out with extra flowers and a bumper season is on the way.I will be able to assume my alter ego of the Flying Fox of the Far North.

For sake of simplicity can we just rename this thread "which are you top five mango cultivars?"  ;D

Mango ties for first 5 times over, because of its world wide popularity, and intense variation of fruit.

Tropical fruit :

Durion and Chempedak
Marang and Mangosteen
Litchee
Mango
Several Eugenias , Myrciarias and Plinia edulis

Since there is still a lot of fruits that I have not tasted yet , this list may change over the years.

Hummm- Plinia edulis -commonly called Cambucá.  As I looked at Govardham gardens selection, this was on my want list.....
Luc- can you describe the taste?

Someone said this earlier, maybe Oscar, and it's true for me as well. The best fruits are the ones eaten at their peak of ripeness, preferably fresly picked. The other day I had some cantaloupe which was excellent. And I usually don't like it much. Same thing happened with watermelon. By the way, there sure are a lot of people who highly esteem watermelon. That was surprising!

Favorites nonetheless would be:

Peach
Lychee
Persimmon
Loquat
Orange

Is Prawn Brain and Red Prawn the same thing? They all look like brains anyways.

Top five fruits--

  • mango  (so much variety and availability here in S Florida)
  • apricot   (should not be on this list because I can find good ones only every few years)
  • cherry   (have eaten about 6lbs so far in 2012)
  • canistel    (yum!)
  • muscadine grapes  (have four vines growing and will soon have more) (Ison Black the best so far)
  • lychee

Guess you haven't heard? Totally illegal to touch a bat in Australia. Farmers have to spend huge amounts of money using netting. One farmer that was using electrical shock system to protect his crops against bats was heavily fined. It's much safer to insult their prime minister than to touch a bat wing.

Why does watermelon surprise you Jaime? That's on my top 5 fruits! A good watermelon on a hot day is heavenly divine! Some of the old watermelon cultivars are also 10X better than any of the junkie supermarket watermelons available today.
About frame of mind, for kids the best fruit is the watermelon stolen from the farmer's field...you know, forbidden fruit?  ;)

Watermelon is not from a fruit tree but>>>>>
I always eat lots of watermelon in the summer heat. I fact eaten nothing but watermelon for 5 days as a cleanse. You piss a lot. Seeded only of course same as you.

Watermelon needs honorable mention as fruit. Really its a huge swollen cucumber, same family but originating in Africa
