Hi,
Do you have in stock of pre-germinated or sprouted Gold apple seeds? I found it extremely difficult to germinate this difficult Thai persimmon seed as my previous imports of more than 50 seeds ended up in complete failure in South Africa. Kindly confirm. Thanks
Paul

I'm wondering this as well.  I have one plant I grew from seed, and am curious if I will ever get fruit and if so what it'll taste like.

Yes. Its very hard to germinate them. I do not know how to germinate. I too have failed many times. Out of many buyings one seed germinated but died after few weeks. Better to buy germinated seeds. Can popsi germinate them and sell. How is the taste. Only some varieties seem to be tasty

All Diospyros seem hard to germinate .The seeds need to be fresh.

There's another issue about growing Diospyros decandra, according to http://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Diospyros+decandra, the species is dioecious, i.e. it has male and female flowers borne on separate trees. One needs to be patiently enough, if he/she can manage to grow it from seeds to maturity, when it can be distinguished which one is male and which is female. Unlike most Asian persimmons, female flowers can set fruit without the pollens from a male. Unfortunately there is scant information about this species though it is popularly grown in SE Asia. Perhaps some experts can shed light and provide us with more information, e.g. time needs to take from seed to first fruiting, correct method to germinate the seeds, stratify or not stratify, etc.

I have some feedback from a Thai eBay vendor about the fruiting habits of Diospyros decandra, the Gold Apple, for all forum members to share as reproduced below: -

“Both male and female flowers are residing on the same tree.
Fruits have 2 shapes: Flat fruit is born from a male flower that grows to be a false fruit without seeds.
Round fruit is born from a female flower that will produce seeds.
Usually, one tree will have alternate bearing habit with different year. If this year it produces flat fruit, then it will produce round fruit the next year.
However, it happens that some trees come out with flat and round fruit together at the same time.”

The above seems to contradict somewhat with what stated in
http://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Diospyros+decandra, which I have quoted in my previous posting on the 7th July. The website said the species is a dioecious, i.e. with either male flowers or female flowers borne on separate trees.

In this connection, we have to do lengthy experiments by ourselves to find out the truth, which might take years.

Looks like otther Diospyros that can be male for a few years then suddenly make female flowers.D Virginiana is somehow similar and sometimes might have both types of flowers on the same tree .

Is anyone growing this stateside?

I've long been interested. I may be wrong but exotic diospyros seem less popular than other tropical fruits (including the ones with temperate cousins). I guess due to the maturity length and size? Just a guess.

Is there any cold hardiness to this species? Knowing many in the family are somewhat cold hardy. I'm in a zone 8 ish environment where other persimmons easily grow. Wondering if this type can handle here?
Trying to grow it all!
