Tropical Fruit Discussion / Muntingia calabura
« on: August 01, 2012, 04:48:11 PM »
Every day I walk past 5 of these when walking the dogs and always marvel at the amount of fruit ( almost year round ) They are probably the most productive fruit trees I know and really nice to nibble on ...
After trying , just for fun , numerous times and unsuccessful to reproduce them from seeds and also finding almost no volunteer seedlings , I am starting to believe these seeds have to pas the digestive system of a bird or so to be able to germinate......????
The fruits here are very sweet and one centimeter diameter , if they could be improved to double that size everybody should grow one...

To Floridagreenman :  Also in this group, are those Mangos grown in places like Peru and Mexico that are picked a month before they
are mature, then refrigerated, hot dipped according to USDA requirements and sold here in Florida and elsewhere
in the US for 50cts to $1. The vast majority of these are HORRIBLE

You should try the same fruits ripened on the trees here !!!!

My list :

Temperate fruits:

The good old fashion white peaches my grandma used to grow back home in Belgium
Pears idem as above
Plum ' Reine Claude '
Cherries
The strawberries I used to grow back home

Tropical fruit :

Durion and Chempedak
Marang and Mangosteen
Litchee
Mango
Several Eugenias , Myrciarias and Plinia edulis

Since there is still a lot of fruits that I have not tasted yet , this list may change over the years.

« on: July 28, 2012, 08:21:14 PM »
I have the bad habit of planting every seed that comes in my path and not always marking the pot or nursery bag , most of the time I remember....but this one no idea...

The reason I mentioned a Baobab is that it came up in a planter where I planted baobab seeds a long time ago.

Some type of mulberry maybe ?

This reminds me to check the local trees ..
And to Har : something similar happened at the orchard with and excellent fast bearing avocado hybrid , not even mentioning other grafted seedlings that were mowed down with the grass cutter...

Btw, we buy agave syrup here as a sweetener. It is very good tasting. Is that made from same agave as is used for making tequila? Is the agave syrup a by product of the manufacturing of tequila?

Not sure Oscar , but I don't think it is from the same plant ( the blue agave ) Lots of different agave growing here...

My biggest plant ( seeds from Australia ) is 1,5 meter tall and wide , produces in abundance over several months , fruits are not bad at all when they fall by them self , not before .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Getting Jackfruit latex off of things
« on: July 28, 2012, 02:59:12 PM »
Almost no latex left when the fruit is very ripe .
I know it is not the best/healthiest thing to use but thinner works perfectly , I wash my hands and knife a few times when I am done...

The only mulch that is available and free here is the left overs from processing the agave plant to make Tequila , my idea is to cover the whole orchard with it to keep humidity in the ground and maybe keep the weeds a little under control . This mulch has a sweet sugary smell ( maybe it is sweet but I am not gonna taste it ) . If there are sugars in it , how would this affect the soil and plants ????? I did a small part as a test , so far nothing negative happened besides some white fungus growing here and there , will take a pic and post later....

I have one in the ground for a few years now , not doing well due to too much shade , would transplanting kill the tree ?
Was never successful with cuttings and seeds , probably too much water...I'll never learn....

The seeds are really very tiny , neglect-able when eating the fruit , one of the best guavas I had so far.
I have them on my list as Psidium littorale ????

Hi Richard,

Glad to hear that Mexican Garcinia has reached your corner of the world too. If that plant could speak it would say "Veni, vidi, vici".

Tomas

Too bad I didn't keep track of all the seeds I mailed out over the years , but they are growing in all continents except Antarctica

The E. itaguahensis also fruits a lot faster and a lot smaller , started to fruit this year at 50 cm tall , just a few fruits though and the birds got them....so I cannot comment about the taste.
Now waiting for the copacabana , not holding my breath according to Harri and Marco's comments , but then again , Marco told me the neonitida was his favorite Eugenia and for me it is way down the list.

It would be great to be there in Santa Cruz when they have the fruit festival , their president is kicking Coca Cola out of the country which is a good example for the rest of the world , but....unless he is gonna make his own using the original ingredients....I really don't trust his " good " intentions , and how am I gonna make a Cuba Libre when I am there....

Mike T ,
