Help with my sapodilla
« on: November 18, 2018, 06:53:19 PM »

Can someone tell me why the leaves are turning red? I bought the tree about a month ago and it is still sitting inside the pot. I planned to put it in the ground in Spring or should I do it now?

Have you fertilized?  What water are you using? Chlorinated?

My sapodillas usually shut down in the Winter and I don't usually get new flushes.
I am in zone 9b 10a though. In my area I would leave in pot and water with rain or pond
water and plant out in the Spring. Is it a grafted named variety? If you water 2-3 times
a week in the winter it should be enough. In the spring when it flushes it will eventually
work out the discolored leaves. Does the city water have chlorine or chloramine added?
In Florida my trees like full sun and I add compost and plenty of organics to my soil. I add
coffee grounds, oak leaves, fresh mulch 2-3 times a year.
Usually fertlizer greens them up.  Not sure about your water?

My sapodilla leaves exhibited some brownish/rusty blotches  from time to time, more so when it was younger. I never knew what the cause of this for sure, but it doesn't seem to effect the health of the tree, and I did not do anything special for it. Here is a photo from 2014:

It's normal. The Sapotaceae family suffers from leaf rust (Acrotelium lucumae) — mainly on young trees. I agree with previous post that it won't affect the health of the tree at all. Sapodilla trees are one of the toughest fruit trees you can grow —it's hard to over-watering or under-watering them.

That's a relief. I guess I'll just put it in the ground now.
