Flying Dragon start growth later than the standard trifoliata. I have a
Rubidoux in my back yard that is almost in full bloom. The FD is just not starting to show signs of bud break.

I gave a friend a couple of Cocktail grapefruit recently. His wife hated grapefruit until she tasted the cocktail. Now they have to have one.

The banked trees are quite large today and still producing. I moved several in 1993 when we moved to Lumberton TX. Have not lost a single tree.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Citrus - Number of years to bear fruit
« on: November 10, 2014, 01:07:04 PM »
Normally when a tree is grafted or budded with scions from a mature bearing tree it will normally bear in 3 years. It is advisable to remove the fruit for the first 3 years. The canopy should be formed before  bearing.

Do not know why anyone grows calamondin when they could grow Kishu.

I have a number of satsuma trees in my back yard. Most have a fair amount of fruit. The silverhill has very few, it had a large crop last year. Have a fair amount of Kishu this year, great fruit.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Owari Satsuma ripeness
« on: October 01, 2014, 03:47:35 PM »
Owati satsuma has been around for a long time.  Some ripen earlier that Owari. Miyagawam,  XShan, Louisiana early and early StAnne are all eary ripening satsumas. Miyagawa and Xie shan are at the top of my list.  Armstrong Early is also an early ripening but the worst of the bunch. Kimbrough is another satsuma, I do not know if it is available any more. In the future when they are getting soft sample one.
Take CAre,

There is another very small mandarin, Kishu, that is a great one. Have never seen a person that did not like it.

T-budding is much faster however cleft grafting and whip and tongue works equally as well and gives a much straighter trunk without the off set, just takes more time.

One thing that was learned from Fletcher Granberry in 1969 was to do the fall budding in the fall after the daytime temp had dropped below 85 degrees F. The first good rain after labor day. Met him in 1969 and he died in 1973. He wrapped his buds with cotten string and coated the bud with warm wax. He banked the bud with good sandy soil Thanksgiving, uncovered the bud Good Friday and topped the plant about an inch above the bud. The plants were sold in early November for $1.00 each. The complete row  was sold and had to dug and gone from his place by November 10th. If the plants froze they would freeze on the buyer and not the grower. He sold very nice field grown plants.

The Rich 16-6 is slower growing than the Rubidoux, several Louisiana growers are going to Rich16-6 and Flying dragon for orchard trees.  As most of the citranges get older they tend to bench and decline, plus on Flying dragon they plant more trees to the acre and do not have to harvest fruit of of a ladder. One grower I personally know had a worker fall of a ladder a couple years ago so he is going with the smaller trees.

43
Do not be surprised that all nurseries in Texas will be required to grow their citrus nursery stock in screened green houses in the near future.

44
I like to let the trees branch 24 tp 30 inches from the soil so the fruit is not touching the ground.

XIE Shan anad Miyagawa are my choice for 2 of the best satsumas. The Louisiana Early, Early St. Anne, Brown Select are also very good. Several of the China varieties are also good.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Dr. brown's Colo Hardy Article

The Brown Select, Louisiana Early, and Early ST. Anne were selections of Dr. Ralph Brown When he was director of the citrus group at Port Sulfur Louisiana.

48
The Brown Select is a satsuma that was from the LSU  center center at Port Sulphur Lousiana. It was a selection of Dr. Ralph Brown. It is no longer in operation. The Louisiana Early and Early St Anne were also his selections. Star farm, Belle Chase Louisiana had obtained budwood of these cultivars and had them budded and banked with soil during one of the severe freezes. The citrus center lost their trees. We have Star Farm  to thank for these still being around today. The Brown Select was named after Dr. Ralph Brown. He was the superintendent of the Louisiana citrus center for over 30 years.

49
I have probably 10 satsumas growing in the ground. They produced an excellent crop last year. This year there are very few fruit and very little new growth.  We had fairly cold temperatures the past winter. My friends from the citrus center were here Wednesday and they believe it was the cold that cause the loss of fruit this year.
