Which 3-4 mango varieties to choose?
« on: April 11, 2017, 04:25:13 PM »
I have space in my yard for about 3-4 mango trees
After doing some research and making a small list, which 3-4 would you guys recommend?

Lemon zest, coconut cream, Glenn, Nam doc mai, cotton candy

Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks guys and happy growing :)

I see you are in California. I would recommend 4 non Grafted Lavern Manilla mango trees. Stick them into the ground and let them grow about 4 scaffold branches. In several years, you can top work the scaffold branches with mature scions.

So far the best proven mango is Sweet Tart and must have. I would axe Lemon Zest, consistently poor and inconsistent mango here, total failure. Blooms this season are all turning black for me and Frank, there is something about it. Coconut cream is another one to stay away. instead of Lemon Zest, go with PPK

I'd definitely go with PPK if Lemon Zest isn't recommended for SoCal.  Same great and unique flavor.  I've had some that surpassed Lemon Zest.  It seems appropriate rootstock is the key for California mango growers.

on rootstock, manila or ataulfo, smaller the better as it will develop better roots.
