I didn't know they were the biggest in this country.Mildura is almost a desert climate with very high summer temps routinely at 45c and quite cool in winter.

Typically Australian farms look for automation as labour costs and wages are so high. Minimum wages are around 20/hr US which is much higher than the US and othger citrus growing countries generally. I would not be surprised if the US systems are less automated and more worker oriented as a result.
