Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: SoCal LZ and NDM update 2021

I would love to see people eat fruit for the fruit itself  and not based on what a random machine says.

Most definitely, I have 2 1/2 LZs for that reason. 2 are on turpentine and 1 with PPK grafted on Manila.

Cool, I will wait longer this year. Last year I picked at slightest yellowing around the nose and let them ripe on the counter. Some ended up with a brix of 28.1, there are definitely some room for improvements then!

Those are some nice looking LZs Simon, thanks for sharing. Here are some almost ready to pick LZs on my second tree. My third LZ is a graft on Manila and holding only 1 fruit this season.

Tbat sure doesn't look like its close to being ready.

At least share a picture or some tips about when to pick.

The Mulgoba is a Florida mango (suspected seedling from India), which is documented in the CRFG material and is the founding fruit of the Florida mango industry, being a progenitor to most of the commercial successes like Haden. It's sought after when available, but never rose to the point of being a commercial success due to it's infrequent fruiting. If grown somewhere where there's enough cold influence, the fruiting may be more consistent.

That's very good to know and worthy of trying. I will send an updated list to Alex.

With such strong cold influence, you may be able to fruit the North Indian type mangoes that don't fruit much in Florida. Like Mulgoba and Shamsul Asamar. Definitely worth trying difficult to fruit types.

Looks like Alex may have Shamsul Asamar, I need to order scions from him. Not sure about Mulgoba, didn't see any glowing reviews on it yet.

Has anyone approached ZHPP about selling mislabeled AB for years, or they don't care?

I will post pictures of alampur later today after work. I bought it as 7 gal from champa last fall. I believe it came from pine island nursery. It hasn’t done anything other than flowering. I removed small fruitlets but it flowered for the second time.

Edit: Oolie, I would definitely like to grow those varieties that don’t do well in Florida, but would like to try it first. Sapote, these LZs are from end of April bloom.

I would like to share a few pictures of my LZ and NDM from zone 9b. We get low 50s sometimes until end of April or early May, so my mangoes are always late to ripe. Other mango growers of SoCal, please share you pictures. Both LZ and NDM are in rootmaker panel with open bottom. I had to plant them really closely due to space limitations and currently growing over 40 varieties of mangoes and other sub tropicals . Happy gardening!

Mine was leggy as well and required additional staking. It rebounded to this quickly in 50:50 mix of worm gold plus and pro-mix.

It is somewhat leggy, but I don’t mind it’s shape.

My 7 gal bought from champa early last year is holding fruits. I potted it in 15 gal soon after purchasing. It flowered last year but didn’t fruit. I looked at it closely yesterday and saw fruits hanging, it has become a tall tree ~9’ high from bottom of the pot. Jimmy @ Champa honors previously advertised sale pricing until a new one is posted.

Just finished planting my 2 Dongkui and 2 An Hai in 5 gal rootmaker pots. I used Pro-Mix mixed with pumice and bio-char. I am keeping them in loft with plenty of indirect lighting. Also added a humidifier for humidity, I have to add water every 2 days or so until I buy a bigger unit. Hoping for the best and thanks to Ken again for making this happen.

Payment sent for 2 Dongkui. Thanks for making them available.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 2021 Lychee Season

Out of everything I’m growing the bees love the lychee tree the most, whole tree is swarmed and buzzing... has anyone ever had lychee honey? Just as there is clover ect, I can image if one had a lychee grove it would be possible.

Beautiful tree! How old is the lychee tree?

We don't worry much about black sooty mold on the OUTSIDE of branches and trunks--- spray oil or insecticidal soap or BioWash or Copper sprays keep that in check or even clean it up.

Was the underbark and wood INSIDE your tree's main trunk discolored?

To my eye, yes, there was discoloration inside the trunk almost to the graft line. You can see it in the pictures of the branches above. It was less discolored as I went lower on the trunk.  Here’s some better pictures:

I thought black death, underbark discoloration and ultimate demise of mango trees are limited to SoCal. I lost quite a few trees  when I started planting mangoes to these symptoms, I tried abound, regalia, copper etc., but none worked once a mango started to dry up from the top. At the beginning I used rich black soil when planting, now I switched to native soil and sand. But I still loose one or two young mangoes here and there. I would like to know the real reason behind these symptoms. Most folks here in SoCal blame the rootstock, but it can't be true because I lost mangoes on Manilla and Corrientes as well.

I added an EZKIT to my drip irrigation line to fertilize my trees. Adding kelp, fish or any water soluble fertilizer to the reservoir only takes a few minutes.

They also have a portable version for hose bibs.

Looks like Maha Chanok is going to be the first mango of the year for me. Tree is holding different sized fruitlets while flowering :) I was afraid of loosing fruitlets when temp was 31F a few weeks ago.
