Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pouteria ucuqui
« on: March 13, 2021, 05:38:44 PM »
Is anyone growing this sp. or has anyone tasted the fruit?

I found this information:

And also this pictures an information in Twitter (source: https://twitter.com/FrutasColombia/status/1243480933006794753)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Air Layering with Water
« on: November 30, 2019, 06:33:44 PM »
I recently found some videos about air layering with water instead of soil. It is very simple, but should be very effective. Here are some vids:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Recent white zapote grafts
« on: January 01, 2017, 04:41:27 PM »
I few month ago I did several grafts. On vigorous trees the success rate was about 80%, on a weak tree the success was 0%.
The new cultivars I have grafted are: Walton, Nies and C. tetrameria #6. Has anyone tasted those cultivars?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lepisanthes fruticosa
« on: March 19, 2016, 07:03:47 AM »
Anyone growing it? I have one plant in ground for a few years. It does not grow, but it does not die either. But that's maybe because of the place where I planted it, not because of the climate.

In my last journey I found a fruiting plant in a temple in Ayutthaya. I was very excited to see fruits for the  first time. Unfortunatelly it was a big dissapointment. The fruit had not sweetnes, no flavour, but a slightly bad aftertaste. So not worth growing for the fruit. But maybe there a good ones out there. Has anyone tasted the fruit of L. fruticosa or other L. species?

Here some pictures:

Here are some pictures of my recent visit to the Chatuchak Market in Bangkok. This market is really amazing, but not so great for buying fruit trees IMO: You can sure find some interesting stuff, but the variety is not so big and the accuracy about cultivars (if any) is not high. Ofter sellers do not have a clue what exactly they are selling.

Enjoy the pictures :)

This fruit stands are in a market next to JJ, called 'Or Tor Kor'. It is a pretty nice place for fruit lovers, but be warned that it is the must expensive market I have seen in Thailand (confirmed by locals).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit hunt in Germany
« on: July 03, 2014, 06:37:54 AM »
Dear friends,

find attached my haul from a fruit hunt in Germany ;)

The fruit is imported from Thailand and the quality is very good. The litchis are huge, in fact I have never had such big litchis in my hands. I would rate the taste as very good, but not excellent.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Amelie mango
« on: April 08, 2014, 05:24:12 PM »
A frew days ago I bought a few Amelie mangos from Burkina Faso in a market in Germany. They were very good. They fruit looks like a small Kent and has an indian taste profile; deep orange fibre free flesh, complex acidic and resinous taste. I thought this cultivars was the indian Ameeri, but after comparing some pictures in the web, I realized that they are not the same cultivar. Has anyone information or experience with Amelie?

I will post tomorrow some pictures.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Chirimoyas at the research station
« on: November 17, 2013, 05:48:36 PM »

Dear friends,

here are some pictures I did a few days ago. I was really amazed about the size of the fruit! They are currently growing three cultivars: Fino de Jete, Madeira and Mateus. The first cultivar is excellent (taste, production, pollen, rootstock...), while the other two are nothing special. The work at the research station with chirimoyas has been low for many years. I'm trying to encourage the researchers to give chirimoya more interest.

This orchad was manually pollinated last spring for two days. As a result, the trees produced few fruit, but the shape was perfect and the size huge. I have never seen such big chirimoyas. I think the bigger FDJ was around 3 lbs..

Here some aditional information in spanish:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Who wants jackfruit?
« on: September 08, 2013, 04:38:18 PM »

Recently a friend shot a picture while I was risking my life to get a jackfruit pretty high from the groung  ;D

I'm not sure if it was a seedling or a Black Gold, all I can say is that it was very sweet and tasty, despite of the big ammounts of latex.
