Fruit Plants that will help prevent erosion Tampa Area.
« on: February 21, 2020, 10:36:08 AM »
I live on a 60 acre lake just south of Tampa 9B 10A that is prone to erosion.  Can any of you give me some ideas on what fruit trees or bushes that would be good for erosion control?  I would like to plant them along the bank.

Elderberry with an understory of native emergent aquatic plants should work.
Elderberry is extremely easy on a bank, has pleasant flowers, culinary and medicinal uses, makes a great wine.
If you can find a stand of elderberry, 1" diam. cuttings 12 inches long pushed into wet soil grow very easily.
This nursery in your area carries the plants:

Beware of why the bank may be eroding, someone may be using herbicide or mowing too close to the bank or just water level fluctuations leaving the bank bare with no intact littoral zone.

Elderberry its a really good option and grows fast plus it makes a lot of nice fruits to make jam.
The jam is verry tasty and healthy but dont eat too much at once since it can cause stomack troubles.

I like to plant coconut palms here, but it’s the intercoastal not fresh water.
Don’t rush, take time and enjoy life and food.
