Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Passiflora Ligularis / Sweet Granadilla
« on: November 20, 2019, 04:19:30 PM »

Just wondering if there is anyone out there in Southern California that has had success with Passiflora ligularis - Sweet granadilla. Just purchased a couple of them and any hints or tips on growing them would be appreciated. I have done a search about it but most results came back with negative results and most people saying it will not grow well in SoCal.

How are your plants doing?  I'm looking to buy some vines, but curious if they've survived in SoCal.  Have they flowered?

Found a listing on Ebay for a live plant Myrica rubra - Red Bayberry - Live Plant https://ebay.us/sSd70U

Looks like someone in Florida.  I'd bid but I'm in California,

Fruit trees can be shipped to Cali from Florida, FYI. You could have bid on that myrica rubra.

Good to know, well I wouldn't have paid $175 anyhow.  Wonder if it's someone here that won the auction.
Another plant went for $127.50

I've located a wholesaler in China that will sell 1-2 year seedlings for $1.99/pc but the minimum order is 500 and shipping is $500.  So, the total cost would be around $1500.00 with a phytosanitary certificate.  Obviously, I don't have a need for 500 plants nor do I want to spent that kind of cash.  But if anyone else does https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/High-quality-Myrica-Rubra-Waxberry-Tree_60585576333.html

The contact Jun Li responds to email in english.

You need to go to agriculture department in China to obtain the phytosanitary certificate.

Have you gone through the process in China?  I've read in some countries they take the plant into quarantine.

I am looking to have my parents bring back Myrica Rubra seedlings from China.  I got permits from APHIS to import the plants, however I can't locate any information on how to obtain a phytosanitary certificate.  Can you just take the plants (bareroot) to the airport for inspection?

New video from CRFG on Calmei’s progress on the commercialization of the fruit.  Interesting tidbits on the cultivation of the plant.  Unfortunately they aren’t selling any plants.

Survived 111 yesterday and 110 today. fingers crossed for tomorrow. I have been watering twice a day now to ensure there is plenty of moisture for uptake.

I'm doing the same watering at the peak heat @ 3PM, seems to be really helping.

Hi friends,
Really thanks if anyone could advise me the ID for this fruit.
It is a kind of wild jungle vine in the north of Vietnam.
They call it Quả Máu (Blood Fruit) or Máu Chó (Dog's Blood Fruit).

You can see this video for reference:

I was out of town for the heat wave so I couldn't adjust my watering or protect any plants.  I was told it reached almost 110 in Long Beach.  Amazingly only a couple plants got sun burned.  A couple of my blackberry plants wilted.  My Grumichama has burned leaves all over it and dropped a lot of fruit.  My two foot Sharwil Avocado also got burned badly.  A couple of my mangos got burned but nothing too bad.  And my Lemon Zest keeps dropping almost all its fruit.  They split and then drop off the tree but I guess that is for another post.

Bill

We recently replaced our "dumb" sprinkler controller with a Rachio 3.  It's pretty awesome being able to adjust the watering schedule or do manual runs from anywhere.  It also uses local weather data to automatically adjust the schedule as well.  I would highly recommend looking into one, if you travel often.

If the plastic bag is on the tree, in this heat and sunny location, you can expect a dead tree very soon. Keep it shaded and well watered minus the bag (if the sun is expected to hit the tree at some point during the day). Good luck. Chris

It's currently in a well shaded area under our oak tree (no direct sunlight) with the plastic bag which has a few small holes.    I contacted the seller, they suggested keeping the bag on and adding small hole at the top of the bag.

Thanks for the advise.

Thanks for the feedback!  I'll wait a few weeks and see if it recovers from the shock.

Hi,

I bought this tree from http://chfruittreenursery.com about 3 weeks ago.  This is a 5 gallon tree that had the soil and root ball trimmed to the size of a tennis ball and was wrapped in newspaper (which I left on).   The tree has been under a clear plastic bag with a few small hole the entire time. I'm concerned that it has lost all of it leaves and not seeing any new growth.  Perhaps, I'm being impatient with it.  You can see from the pics where I did a scratch test which was still damp.

What do you guy think?  Should I be concerned?

Has anyone seen this site ?

http://www.fruit-trees-nursery.com/myrica_rubra.htm

they say they ship to the USA.
i am sending them an email to get pricing.
it may be cheaper to get a group order going ?
i really want 1 or 2 (they have different varieties)
"black-peak" looks interesting...

Please keep us posted when they reply.

unless its very expensive i will probably order.

I emailed them as well, and they quoted me 83 USD per tree for 10 trees.  The plants sizes are 50-70 cm height and 0.6-0.7cm diameter.

I've also bought seeds from Sheffields from both lots (2012, 2013) and crack open the endocarp using a vise.  I was probably 80% successful at extracting the seed without damaging it.   Also about 20% of the seeds were not viable, the seed was dried and black.  The seeds were soaked in 800 ppm GA3 for 24 hours and now being cold stratified.
