Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: F2 citrange winter hardiness trial
« on: February 22, 2023, 09:51:01 AM »
Amazing work, thanks for the updates Kumin.  I would love to cross these hardy segentranges with my changsha and nagami and select for zone 7 adaptation.

Interesting.  Could it also be the extra warmth has an effect of the plant hormones related to fruiting phase?

Frank, I would love to hear more about your kumquat crosses.  Thanks for the nursery tip -- hopefully they still have one!

Mikkel, that's a great illustration thanks.  Its like an instant backcross!  I wonder if its more efficient to use a triploid as the mother than the pollen parent in a 3n x 2n.  Since as Frank says the procimequat is nucellar I will hopefully get to try it.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Making new periclinal chimeras like Prague
« on: November 16, 2022, 07:11:18 PM »
Several years ago I looked through the literature on chimera synthesis, and this technique appears to be the most efficient method that isn't in vitro.  Its more efficient than a lot of the in vitro methods.  The Japanese have done a lot of work in this area.  I think its a very promising technique.  It consists of approach grafting two seedlings, decapitating the shoot tips, and then further cutting just one of the seedlings at like a 45 degree angle.  Then you apply a plant hormone blend and put parafilm over them.  To select out chimeras you look for the shoots that are slowly growing.  I guess with citrus you could say its a 1/12 success rate instead of a 1/6--given that half would have poncirus flesh.  But still that's amazing to do in just one generation and isn't a ton of work either.  Of course for further breeding a chimera is a dead end.

These F2 citranges should be more highly zygotic than the mother right?  Very encouraging progress.

Upon looking up crossing a triploid with a diploid, this came up:

"Therefore, triploids may produce tetraploid offspring when selfed or crossed to diploids or tetraploids. Because the probability of two 2n gametes uniting is expected to be low, researchers have hypothesized that triploids will play an important role in tetraploid formation and evolution (Harlan & de Wet, 1975)"

If the procimequat x poncirus created a tetraploid, maybe the greater genomic complexity could explain a palatable F1 with poncirus?

I guess the only way to know would be to ask the breeder about the siblings from this cross.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Procimequat x poncirus

Looking through the meiwa x flying dragon thread from a few years ago it seems some people here bought seed from this cross on eBay.  Any updates on the seedlings?

What was amazing is that the breeder claims the skin of this hybrid is palatable like kumquat, and even likes to eat them as much as meiwa!  This seems unheard of for a poncirus F1.  Is there some magic in the parentage of procimequt, maybe triploidy that has promoted this, perhaps something from the hindsii genetics?  Maybe just a lucky outlier.  As someone wanting to breed hardy kumquat hybrids, it’s very inspiring to know it has already been done for zone 7.  Assuming of course that the seller isn’t being misleading.  Is procimequat available anywhere?

Thanks Pandan !  It’s a hardy one for sure, as it went through the polar vortex in 2014 I think it was.

I'm probably too late on these, especially with no rootstock at the moment.  But I would try to root some if the success rate is even halfway decent and they're still sitting there.

Which cultivar is this ?

http://www.chillypalmtree.com/CITRUMELO.html

I planted one of these where I used to live probably 8 years ago or more, in zone 7 Virginia.  It is in terrible soil and never fertilized, watered or pruned.  But it still survives and is close to 10 feet tall.  I wish I could’ve seen it thrive in that time but I moved and it got no attention.

Kumin, I’m sure you’re right that the rind won’t be exciting but look forward to hearing about it.

Vnomonmee, amazing work!  Can’t wait to see updates upon germination.  This was my hope too, to cross with yuzu and kumquats.  Maybe you could store hindsii pollen to try on P+?

Peep, Ichangquat definitely sounds interesting.  I guess that puts 6-7-2 close to the hardiness of something like a Thomasville citrangequat?  Along similar lines, I wonder also about using something like a Taiwanquat, since the F1 taitri is already zone 7 hardy that might be another route to follow at least in terms of getting a higher percentage of cold hardy progeny early on.

Tedburn, nice luck!  I’m looking forward to updates as the orangequat hybrid develops.

Walt, thanks for the link.  There is a lot of to learn there going through that thread.  From Marcin’s experience, the F1s are fairly cold hardy already.

It sounds like the kumquats and P+ are both zygotic so that’s already a huge boon.

I don't know when I would approach your number of seedlings Kumin, but I just started reading the F2 citrange thread and its really inspiring and interesting.  It gives me hope that it could be possible to have a more than 50% kumquat hardy in zone 7.  Aromatic leaves would be really nice too, looking forward to hearing how that aromatic citrange you selected develops.

You all have gotten me excited about the possibility of breeding new cold hardy citrus.  It seems like P+ can potentially bring a new generation of edible hardy hybrids.  I live in zone 7 and I like citrus with edible peels like kumquat.  P+ has no resin in the flesh, but does it have wax in the peel?  What other citrus cultivars would be good to contribute to such a goal ?

Looking for improved Feijoa, especially early ripening or cold hardy.  Looking to do a hedge or two.  Thanks!

MameyDisco, let me know if you get seed forming, I’d love to try to grow out seedlings.  I’m also curious about how fertile they might be, like are there lots of flowers but few seed.

Caesar,

I’m growing out 2 accessions from the Azores and one seedling from a friends plants.  They are both flowering now, about a month earlier that the standard from grown in the US.
