Title: Greenhouse for citrus trench type. Zaporizhia, Ukraine
Post by: Sergiy on June 06, 2019, 04:45:42 PM
A bit of history, and then in essence)))
I live in the south of Ukraine. USDA zone - 6a. Of course, citrus fruits in such conditions can be grown only indoors, protecting them from the winter cold. For the first time I saw that it was possible in the distant youth, as a student of the biological faculty of the university. And it was just a huge greenhouse, dug into the ground by almost two meters. Many years have passed since then, but the idea of building a warm home for citrus trees has permanently settled in my head. In 2014, a greenhouse with an area of 50 square meters, dug into the ground by one meter and filled with soil around the perimeter by another meter, was built.

Based on the free area in a convenient location, it was decided to build a 5 by 10 meter greenhouse with an east-west orientation.

The walls were built from a material with high thermal conductivity on cement-sand mortar.

After the formation of the walls, the installation of the roof began. It is based on the central timber, which rests in the center of the greenhouse on the installed square tube and the strapping timber, which was fixed to the wall with threaded rods and nuts. Then rafters were attached to these bars.

On the rafters installed transverse slats. Thus was created a frame for polycarbonate.

All wooden surfaces were carefully treated with antiseptic.
The greenhouse is covered with a double layer of polycarbonate

So made the entrance to the greenhouse.

Very nice greenhouse!  The precise cuts on the rafter wood and concrete blocks shows a lot of skill.

I also have a greenhouse in zone6.  It is very rewarding, you will love it

I do not know how to show the video of the greenhouse, so I will post links to youtube. I shot it in spring and autumn. So the plants look 4 years after construction. The comment is of course in Russian, but the video is quite indicative.

Nice. So you don’t need supplemental heat? Consider planting any directly in ground?

No, additional heating is not necessary. The temperature in the winter below 3 * C does not fall. Enough internal heat of the earth.
In the greenhouse, in the soil of specially prepared pits immediately after the completion of construction, I planted a rootstock (yuzu), on which I planted various varieties of citrus. Now there are 19 such trees in the greenhouse and I also plan to plant 9. 3-5 varieties are grafted on each. A little later I photograph how it looks.

This is impressive and an inspiration to us growers in colder climates . This could be called a passive solar greenhouse as well with the long south wall and thermal mass of concrete. Looking forward to more information and pictures!
